encryption
encryption is not silly, its useful: i bet lotsa peeps read those encrypted messages, and scrawled out on paper lines to see if they could break the code: note, if you dont want the code to be broken, you really should avoid ending the message 'Yaven out'.
server politics
bhg attacking zoners? corsairs assisting bhg? corsairs escorting zoners to crete? these things are events, and they need to be broadcast, or else the lovely hand-crafted rp you have fine-tuned is completely wasted
metagaming
for some reason everyone thinks that posting messages here, where it is unsecured, lets people metagame. not true. people can only metagame the information that YOU have provided. in other words, if you are careful, you can get him thinking what you want him to think. you could say 'attack planned on lividia shipyard, these are the co-ordinates and route through the minefield, date and time to be announced'. they run around like headless chickens, and pull loads of ships back to lividia, through that awful minefield. the next day you announce a date and time, and they all log in, and sit there waiting, while you calmly attack a completely different target, and all their heavy artillery are flipping ages away. you claim victory. hurrah. they learn not to trust anything in a message dump, and you say, silly commander, always getting the two places mixed up, he meant the *other* shipyard, but because he is boss, we don't correct him publicly, would be bad for morale. in other words, dont accept everything you read as true.
that said, i would thoroughly support the use of encrypted messages, if you would set up an event where the code could be stolen, and we could splash the information across the forums... that would be fun.
forum hosting
A&L is a cool and froody individual, who works tirelessly for beer and pretzels during ddos attacks; he has to respect the laws of the land he lives in... not allowed to rape and pillage northern england anymore for example. we have 18,111 members to date. we are all strangers to him, and he don't know us from adam. i completely understand that he wants a plain-text copy of the message sent to him, as well as the algorithm for the one-time code that was used. IF you want to <strike>piss around</strike> waste time writing one-time codes, and doing all that, just for RP-masturbation, well, go ahead. everything sensitive is passed around via skype, or telephone calls, so anything written is for public consumption. if A&L is asked to stand account for you, he needs to know you. stop making his life harder. for all he knows, you have used the same code you found on an interwebz site, and coincidentally, that code was also used by a 7/7 bomber, or something... cyber-policing is much cheaper than regular policing, so expect a lot more of:
'hey, this code was used here too, lets investigate a guy with only arms and legs'
'only arms and legs?'
'yes'
'thats a bit strange'
'yeah, i wonder, does he have no torso cos he blew it up as a suicide bomber?
Why is this still in discussion? Everyone reads other people's RP and communication channel threads. Don't pretend you don't. It's acting on information you're not supposed to have is where the problem starts. And if you genuinely feel that someone is metagaming submit it to the admins. Easy as that.
As it has been said many, many times. If you don't want people knowing it don't post it on the forums.
Communication threads are for PLAYERS to be informed with what is going on in Disco, not CHARACTERS. If you really can't share a thread's info, then you can do the same via Skype. I really doubt that encrypted stuff could get a SRP to someone or anything, anyway.

It's been said already, but I'd like to back it up with my own thoughts if I may.
1-lets PLEASE disallow encrypting on the forums.
If people REALLY need to have messages that can only be read by members of thier own factions, try geting a faction forum set up. Similar to this one ---->The Junkers Congress Private Forums It works great for talking about all of YOU behind your backs! Muahahah!
Now, while everyone natters on about who should and shouldn't be able to read stuff on the forums, I always thought that if it was meant to be private (or semi-private) then one shouldnt post it on a forum with something like 10,000 users and a million posts...
Common sense dudes. Find a way to make it private yourself, or don't post it.
NOONE who posts ANYTHING on such an open forum should have a reasonable expectation of privacy. Thats what skype and email are for. Is you faction so disorganized that you dont have an e-mail list? ...c'mon!
These forums are here for ALL of us.
As we learned, they are totally neccesary to running a decent game server. In the short time the forums were down I saw no less than three people doing completely illegal things and saying "Go report me! Oh, wait, you cant! rofl rofl rofl! *insert expletive here* ".
In the meantime, since noone else is doing it,THANKS A MINT A&L GUY! for taking the time, energy, and cost of hosting this forum server. Myself, I got twitchy in just the 24 hours it was down. I had to read the news instead of the forums, and went into a full depression and needed some meds... I won't go there again *shudders*
Really, thank you.
And to the rest of us, let's please consider the harm that COULD befall someone who altruistically is doing this for the greater good of this awesome community.
Thanks.
Signed. You want to post encrypted content, go find a private forum of your own to do so. Don't get peeps who host this place for fun and for free into legal hassles.
Realworld rules > Discovery rules > Player desires. Plain and simple.
But rumor has it these forums were moved to the game server? Not true? This encryption hassle still an issue?

Secondly. A&L Guy shouldn't be held responsible for what users post on this forum. If the law would hold him responsible for what someone else did then the law sucks.
