and because the female population is good looking in your eyes, you grant an important sport event to the country. I rather grant England the World Cup, see how fanatic they are in club vs club matches. both players and watchers
Too be honest, I'm not a a football fan, so I wasn't too bothered where the World Cup went. the beeb seemed to hype the England bid too much, thogh.
Besides, we've got the Olympics in 2012, a GP at Silverstone until 2027, and the Rugby World Cup in 2015, potentially as champions, depending on how NZ fare at home (though it's not likely we're gonna get an England win, one can dream).
Based on the above, we haven't done too badly for major sporting events, have we?:)
You will never go in to space.
FACT: Space does not exist.
Spheres that insist on going into space are inferior to ones that don't.
Good luck to Russia, but Qatar?!? Average temperature in July is 106F (36c). You can forget about any northern hemisphere team winning in those conditions. I think this one is the most likely to provide an African nation as winners.
Russia is a magnificent country if you can discount corruption and the hooligans trashing sport events (as well as the OMON trashing them), the only possible drawbacks I can imagine for the organization of this event.
China managed to pull off the Olympics, Russia will easily manage the world cup. I say go for it.
In Soviet Russia, World Cup holds you! Apologies couldn't resist. Well despite the fact that I am disappointed that England did not get the bid, I am not so fussed, good luck to Russia I say.
Dream Theater - "Sabre120 and Jongleur officially win. That is all."
Well, if Russia will be able to hold the Olympics and F1 in 2014, then World Cup should also be manageable. I don't see why not (despite corruption and everything). All you need is money, and money's what the government got (at the moment, at least). The country will surely benefit a lot due to massive influx of tourists and because we'll have to build good stadiums in all major cities. Right now there are only a few of those.
But I'm not a football fan and I'm honestly more excited about F1 opportunity than about World Cup or the Olympics.
I'm not very enthused about either of the options either, considering the US was bidding to host it in 2018 as well. I'm not so much surprised about Russia, but Qatar? I feel like my biggest concern is that Qatar's average summer temperature is a high of 110F and a low of 84F. For those of us who use Celcius (the good unit!), that's 43C high and 28C low. That's...Really hot. There's some serious concern for the athletes, there.
Then again, there's the part where Ford Field and Michigan Stadium have the seating capacity of Qatar's biggest stadium before renovation i and after renovation respectively, but those two were thrown out of the US's bid because they were not large enough venues (in the Soccer/Football capital of the United States, according to statistics). This smells somewhat fishy to me.
But, oh well, best of luck to them.

Spain & Portugal offered to host it jointly. Tho frankly after the huge bloody waste of money that happened the last time, I'm not surprised or sad to the slightest.
Tho Qatar's "win" did surprise me. I mean... It's bloody hot there.
