Eric looked at the two as they spoke, he gulped, lightly sweating, he didn't expect to do this bad. This was his only Chance, Impress them, or die, he chose his words carefully.
I.. I may not be the best man on written exams, or expressing what i feel and what i believe in, but i am willing to put those badly spoken and written words into Actions. I want to show you i am capable of doing everything that is Required of me in the Fighter Corps. I am ready to lay down my most precious possession for the cause, My Life. You may think me a man of words, but i ask you to not only look at my , i must admit bad impression, in the written and spoken ways of my actions, but my actual actions in the Field, if you choose to give me this chance, i will devote every second, every penny, every move , to the Cause. I know these may sound like empty promises to you, but they are not. Actions speak louder than words, any in this case, the actions Scream , while the words only whisper.
Eric stepped back into the line of recruits, looking at Sasha and Rassid, awaiting their final judgement, he pushed out his chest a bit, waiting for the bullet.
Rassid pounded a fist into the desk with all the pent up anger he had, the cracking of a knuckle was muted by the hollow thud of the resulting crater.
"I don't want a damn SPEECH!!"
The last word was bellowed, enough to rattle the wall hangings.
"Just talking and talking and talking, THATS ALL you DO! I asked you to Impress me, and you do the one thing I already said I'm sick of?! Who do you think your trying to be, a revolutionary hero, making speeches and leading men, and talking and talking and talking like some damned politician?!"
He picked up his coffee mug and hurled it with force at the recruit, aiming for the head. The cup glanced off his forehead to land on the metal decking and shatter.
"YOU ARE NOT ALVIN KATZ!! And as much as you think you may be the next Premier - YOU ARE NOT!"
Rassid let out three breaths, each seeming to let out the massive hulking size with which he seemed to have grown too. With the last, he sat down.
"The Coalition...may have a place for you. If you like talking so much, we can have you be a DJ on a radio station, eh? How do you like that? Or...we can put you in a freighter, and have you...disguised...and send you into enemy territory, and see if your cunning tongue can gain some recruits, eh? Since you like WORDS so damn much, I am sure we have jobs befitting such a wordsmith. A newspaper perhaps?! WOULD YOU LIKE THAT?! HUH?! RUN A COALITION RAG FULL OF PATRIOTIC DRIVEL?!!"
"Answer me damn you, or I'm going to beat you within an inch of your pathetic life - If you talk so damn much, WHY DO YOU WANT TO KILL?!!"
As Rassid yelled and beat the hapless recruit, Sasha laced her fingers together and set them down on the table, looking at Otto.
"You can take a bullet. But can you take a bullet for a comrade? Would you take a bullet for a civilian?"
Sasha was up in a flash, gun now aiming squarely at Otto's gut. "Would you gladly walk into the jaws of death to ensure the survival of the Coalition? No thoughts, no doubts? Is that what you will take a bullet for? Or is it only to impress me? Answer truthfully, or you won't live long enough to even think to regret it!"
Eric was Visibly pissed off as the mug impacted his face and Rassid was in his face, seems like Rassid himself liked alot of talking.
It seem you are yourself a man of big words. Why do you talk? I talk ,because i cant show my allegiance any other way in this Metal hunk of a Room. If you are so keen on killing me, put it right between my eyes so i can see it coming when you pull the damn Trigger. I did not come here expecting to become the next Premier, that is your mind twisting my words into a way you like it. I do not want to kill anyone, but if it is so required it is a burden i am willing to Carry. Nothing more has been Said.
Eric was almost engulfed with rage, his voice loud and clear into Rassid's face, he helt him his forehead for the gun
So far Darren hadn't said a word. He'd just stood there silently observing the events as they unfolded. He looked like an idiot. He was sure of that. Rassid had made it clear that he was done with speeches. That only left action. He glanced over at Otto and then at the barrel of Sasha's gun.
But can you take a bullet for a comrade? Will you take a bullet for a civilian? Her words echoed around in his head. He took two steps towards Otto standing between the large man and Sasha's gun.
"I would take a bullet for a comrade." He said simply. He kept his eyes open. If this was to be his death, then he would not close his eyes and shy away from it.
Holzman was now staring at the woman who had been silent all along. He heard her words silent, with the frown of his eyebrows being the only reaction he let through. A little confusion, or maybe surprise, were shown on his eyes, but that was it. That was exactly it!
Unintentionally, Sasha had made clear to himself what his exactly feelings were, and why he were so uneasy. Learn to fire? Easy. Discipline? He already had. Four hours of sleep? Sure. Fit into a cockpit? Manageable. Rations? He could very well have the diet.
"Yes!"
But take a bullet for a civilian? He wasn't even scared of doing it!
And that what had been secretly worrying him all this time! He had finally found had changed inside him.
The speed Otto had answered was backed by honesty. His answer even showed a glimpse of happiness buried inside.
Because that was how he felt, and he didn't need to think to answer that question.
Rassid drummed his fingers on the desk, and did not pay any mind to the red broken knuckle on his right hand. It was starting to swell.
"Growing a spine, eh? In your present condition, you think thats wise?"
The recruit said nothing, but his face was full of determination.
"Very well. I will tell you something. I am well known, but not for what you may think. All over JiangXi, I am known as the best Coalition comedian. Yes, It is true. When I am not doing my duty for the Revolution, I amuse citizens with my jokes."
The absurd words were delivered in a deadpan, complete deadly seriousness, as if he was telling the recruit that he was scheduled for death.
"So, you must tell me what you think of a new joke I have prepared. I want your honest thoughts - I have no tolerance for those that lie."
Rassid pulled in a breath, and stood up. He put his right hand at the small of his back, and raised his left hand in a fist. He closed his eyes, and nodded, waiting for silence.
"There once was a man who came home to his wife, in bed with stranger. He became furious, and after tossing the man out, rounded on his wife. 'You good for nothing whore!' he shouted, 'Look what your spending your time for, while down at the corner store, they are selling eggs - and they only have three boxes left!'"
Rassid lowered his fist, and looked at the recruit, waiting for his response.
Smirking, Sasha calmly exited the room, and returned a few minutes later with a woman in tow...literally. The girl was a mess. Her hair was matted, her face was scratched, and her clothes were ripped and soiled.
"This is Ekaterina. She just came up from JiangXi after a nice drive down the lane with Captain Villers. So Otto, tell me. Would you take a bullet for this girl? She was a pathetic, whimpering girl who's only glorious moments were gunning down the rabbit hordes and, ah, shooting a raider who was going to kill Captain Shigemori. Otherwise, she cowered in the Jeep." Sasha threw the girl down before Otto. "Would you take a bullet for her?"
Eric frowned as Rassid spoke, What kind of Joke was that? If he was a comedian , he was a horrible one.
In all Honesty? That was the worst joke i have heard in a long time. I'd suggest you stay to your Duty to the Coalition, or Perhaps learn some actually Comedy. There is room to Improve your comedy my friend. My Condition? I believe my condition to be just fine, the blood is just an exterior scratch. My Interior is just fine.
Eric looked Rassid in the Eyes, his face still determined, waiting for his respons
Rassid narrowed his eyes at the recruits words. Staring daggers, his scowl broke and half of his lip curled in what could be a smile.
It should be noted that he paid the pathetic creature that the Major brought in, absolutely no thought whatsoever.
"Your right. It is absolute rubbish. If you think me the Coalitions Comedian, then I can certainly show how you funny hydrostatic shock can be."
He stood up, and walked to the front of the desk. Leaning against it, he crossed his arms over his chest, and looked the recruit in the eyes.
"But I agree, this situation needs some...levity. So. Tell me a joke. Make me laugh. I wont waste your time with threats if you don't."
He raised his hand and gestured for the recruit to begin.
