Well, seriously. There will be no notable difference. But no cool explosions IS a notable backstep.
Osiris even have a holes in textures, but who cares.
I love the model, dont get me wrong, but I love the vanila one more.
Curvs and Rheinland dont mix, though I do apreceate what you are trying to do by updating the modle.
It just looses its wonderful Rheinland Industreal armor plating look for a chunky smooth marshmellowy look.
and then when you consiter the death efects and everything.. well.. it seems like a step backwords.
Though.. I wouldnt lock this progect away yet...
I have always been a fan of new and more ships.. no matter what the faction. A while ago (nearly a year now) I was digging through something [LN] related.. and saw how they named their caps after diffrent classes, based on the loadout. That got me to thinking.. what if there were actualy diffrent models with slight vareations, constituting diffrent ship classes? I can see in this the potental to become the rheinland cruiser's twin brother.. with just some slightly altered stats or something.. maybe more manuverable with a light cruiser core and less armor? I dunno.. im just throwing ideas out there.. I can also see a flood of "OMG but rheinland allready has a cruiser!!!" so.. I dont think it will happen due to the community outcry. nonetheless.... it would be awsome if it could.
To make this clear though, I am against it replacing the vinela model.
(PS, you may keep any spelling errors you find. I'm too tired to go back and proof read this post.)
Also, why are people getting mad over debris? Can't I model them for the model and have them imported with it, or does FreeLancer handle debris weirdly?
So long as you follow the standards set by FL and invest the time needed to compelte the work involved it's entirely possible to create vanilla style debris.
How many polys now? Also, remember that the model itself is only half the job. The texture is equally important in terms of how the model will fit in with the rest of the ship line... but at the same time a higher resolution texture would be nice. But at the same time not too high as it might cause performance issues with Freelancer (it's an old game, not very well optimised).
Basically the problem that is on my mind is that this ship will not fit in by the simple virtue of having more details, since Freelancer style modelling in general does not have too many details. It might require redoing the whole Rheinland ship line, but I'll hold my breath until someone does the textures.
It has around 6800 triangles now, but there's some mesh cleanup I can do, and don't worry, the texture is being taken into mind as well.
Also, don't worry about that. I was planning on at least doing the gunboat and destroyer next. The whole point of this post was to really assess if people would want to see something like this, an upgrade of the vanilla models which so rightly need one. If the RM cruiser is taken well then I'll start on the others.
Then hitboxing, hole poking, and explosion chunks and the fuses to do so.
Then all is grand.
In reality, if the model is of superior quality, it may be included.
I say may because Igiss, who we all obey, has the final say. He may not fancy changing vanilla ships. From what I know, he isn't much of a fan of changing vanilla schtuff.
I like smooth edges on my ships. I assume everybody likes smooth edges on their ships.
But this is a matter of changing an original model which might be problematic as it was intended to be in this style. So, if you're going to remodel the Rheinland cruiser then you might as well remodel every single vanilla ship in the mod.
As a proud RC owner, I say: do eeet. Looks great so far, with a slightly upgraded existing texture it would look sexier whilst maintaining the industrial look.
I would like you send me your model if you could, in OBJ format.
you can email me at thill02@gmail.com, I would like to take a closer inspection of it.
