A good few threads have been locked due to being all about politics apparently.
I'd disagree and say they are instead about philosophy.
Topics about such philosophy ought not to be locked.
The claim of "Oh no teh flames!" is more full of holes than certain kinds of cheese.
There is room for actual intelligent discussion on these forums, it's happened before and it could happen again.
Then again, we could just lock all these sort of threads and continue bashing one another over the head in balance topics, talking about how unfair a gunboat is because it's a good ship that's widely used.
Very intelligent.
It is philosophy when people are discussing the merits and faults of any political ideology.
It becomes politics when the discussion gets personal and becomes about defining the character of the people in a party. For example, it is politicking when someone says all liberals want to subjugate the populace to an authoritarian nanny state; or when someone says all conservatives want to dismantle government.
Broad, blanket statements are all about gaining leverage and admiration for any one ideology, that is politics.
If we could actually talk about the philosophy that would be great.
In the USA the core philosophies are good things, IMO, on each side of the divide. Liberals believe there is an inherent social contract with those citizens in need of assistance, that investment, by the government, is a primary tool for advancing society and that regulation is necessary to protect the public. Whereas, conservative philosophy has more to do with civil rights, personal liberties, reduced federal influence on states and limited government overall.
Both have good merits, and, IMO, the best of government is a mix of the two. However, politicking gets involved and each side begins to co-opt issues that they believe they can rally their base behind, even if the issues have nothing to do with their philosophy of governance.

Ye, will remember that if any sort of half-assed serious argument about anything not video game or computer related might come up on the boards again.
Jeez.
Or to say it with the words of someone else, who I happen for once to agree with...

Bullcrap. Punish those who overstep the limits and is guilty of breaking rules. Forum moderators and admins became overprotective of forum and cause more stupidity by locking threads were no insults were thrown while leaving some trolls and similar beasts on the leash while doing nothing to them. It's not hard to overlook discussions. Yes, it's time consuming but by using prevention rather than cure every aspect can be slighty defined in a way mods and admins see fit.
If community is capable of having civil discussion why the are you stopping it? Are you afraid of people speaking some sense making sentences instead of putting +0 off topic crap all over the forums?
Your right, I would rather play it safe, and I have watched too many people be insulted because people who want to talk about politics or philosophy, often talk about it in a serious, argumentative way. Why is this important? Because people take politics seriously, they take the philosophies at the root of their politics seriously as well.
Why get into such serious discussions on a video game forum.

I think time after time after time after time after time this community has shown that it is not capable of having civil discussions.

Because we're all 'lil uneducated kids that need to be protected from the evilness of the world and the bad bc of different views on so many topics by so many people.
There'll always be the few not capable of a proper discussion about anything, yet those who might be able once again have to suffer from the idiocy of the few.
But hey, it's always easier to say "no political discussions" on the forums as to actually have a proper discussion, bad examples of the past or not, there had also been good examples. But hey, remembering those is contraproductive to your viewpoint, so lets just ignore them, ye.
