Today's law actually applies to everybody as well, and some laws only need to be made because of the actions of others. This places a restriction on you that never applied before, all because someone else did something that the lawmakers thought was bad. The most recent economic crisis is evidence of this, but it applies generally to law theory as well.

I don't live in a world which is either black or white.
Nor do I, but the closer you go to either freedom or equality, the more chaotic or more sterile the environment becomes. What we're really arguing about is the balance of the two, and it so happens that I view sterility as a lesser evil when compared to chaos. In other words, we're arguing about which kind of grey we'd like.
