I'm pretty sure the reason you come through above the jump gate is so you don't end up ramming ships on the other side. How would you feel if your little fighter tried to use a jump gate and then BAM, a dread rolls through from the other side and turns you into a fine paste?
Sacrifice a little bit of immersion for gameplay's sake.
