After a bit of a hiatus, Doc returned to Canaria Medical where he met a smiling Dr. Nagger who was relieved to see him. She greeted him with a hug and an offer of coffee over her break which he accepted.
"I heard you took ill for a bit," she began, sitting at her desk sipping her coffee, "It's good to see you well again."
"A bout with the flu," he answered, "and yes, I'm fine."
"Midori and the kids?" she inquired.
"They are well too," he answered.
He then continued with a serious look, "Doreen, I came to see you specifically. I learned of something during my travels that you won't like."
She sighed, "OK. What's wrong?"
"It's Christopher," he continued, "he was shot and killed by an LSF agent in New York. I don't know the details but I did get confirmation of his death."
Doreen slowly stood up and sighed as she turned towards the window looking out of her office. Tears ran down both sides of her face as she shook her head.
"I was left with a hologram when I went to where it happened," he continued, "it disintegrated once finished but he spoke well of you and Benjen." He then stood up himself and went over to her.
"I....I.....tried to reach him," she sobbed, "I tried to get him to settle but he wouldn't." She then tried to rub her eyes to which Doc offered her his handkerchief. She accepted and wiped her face. She then turned to Doc. "I....I loved him," she sobbed, "he loved Benjen and was the closest thing to a father he's had." Doc just held her, comforting her, as she sobbed on his shoulder. As she did, he put things in perspective.
"Christopher Dangen was a violent and wanted man by many. He had few friends and those few were chosen carefully. We should be honored to be amongst those chosen few. Still, he chose his lifestyle, a lifestyle that had this a likely end," he explained. After several minutes, she pulled away with a damp smile.
"Thanks, John," she said softly, "and you're right. It still hurts though."
"It does," he responded gently. "He did leave you something. He left US something but I don't need it so you and Benjen can have it all." He then handed her a small box.
"What's this?" she asked. She opened it to find a card. She then ran it to see what it was. Her mouth hung open as she looked at Doc.
"John, this is a lot of money," she said, "I could retire on this right now, educate Benjen AND any more kids I may have, buy a mansion, my own Med.Force and still have a ton. Are you sure?"
Doc nodded.
She smiled, "Well, my family back in Rheinland needs help and some of these refugees at Port Jackson could use some help as well."
Doc just smiled, "Doreen, your heart is huge and in the right place. You do with it as you see fit."
She hugged him again to whisper in his ear, "I learned from the best."
When they separated, Doc just asked, "Well, shall we get to work?"
