I don´t deal any Hull Damage?

Sorry if this topic was already brought up but I searched for "damage" / "damage bug" / "hull damage" but I did not find exactly my problem / a solution.

Maybe I am also just not understanding things - forgive me if I do so but I just recently joined. I pilot a "CT-53 "Heron" Civilian Train" with 6 "Class 4 Turrets" and I got stopped by a Pirate. As the pirate did not request any Credits and just wanted to annoy me by wanting me to jettison my cargo and blow it up - I tried to fight him.

He was alone and in a Super Heavy Fighter with around 22.000 Hull Strength. So after he attacked me I fired back and his Shields were down in like 3 shots. But then... I did not do a single hint of damage to his hull? Like... seriously nothing? I mean... of course I did not hit him all the time but the few hits I made... dealt zero Hull Damage? But obviously I could hit him as his shields were down in a second.

So what am I doing wrong? I had enough time to check this as it took him quite a while to blow me up.

Am I just misunderstanding things like the relationship between a wepaons "Hull Damage" and "Hull Hitpoints"?

I am sorry if this has an obvious answer but I am fairly new here.
