Not everyone likes RP. Different people have different tastes. I'm just mentioning that the Discovery Community was almost exclusive for those who like RP -- you mentioned it is the Community that kept the project alive, and I think that as well, but it might have been a double-edged blade that kept others not interesting on the RP element away.
I know it's good to have creativity and add a little more fantasy to their gaming environment, but there's also simple people who want some Player vs Player or Player vs NPC action with their friends.
I do believe some rulesets should be established to prevent a "Wild West", for example, a mass Battleship warzone. Then again, wouldn't it be fun to watch and be part of it?
Space Sim is a declining game genre, and it's a fact. Most of my friends that love the genre are right now on EVE... I spoke with a french friend and he told me he might come over soon.
