When you transport Gold from A to B, you are being paid for your time spent transporting the commodity, not for the commodity itself.
Similarly, dealing in ore involves being paid for substantially more time, due to the added time for mining the ore, so the amount of cash exchanged is greater.
If you just think of yourself as a wage per hour worker, there should be no confusion.
No. Flying the gold ore route, including time spent being filled up, and the time spent flying both ways, takes about 30 minutes. After paying the miner his $3,000 per ore, you'd be making $5,300 plus about $1,800 for light arms on the way back, adding to $7,100 per cargo space. Hauling light arms and refined gold, without having to wait for a fillup, takes about 25 minutes for $3,900 profit per cargo space total, both ways. Unless the miner is using a freelancing starflier with starbeam turrets, then it might take long enough to actually make a difference.
Besides that, think of RP reasons. Why would they take gold ore, worth $8,300 a piece in new york, and then "refine" it into Gold, worth only $2,500 in new york?
