Doreen was fresh from her vacation to Hamburg. Her hair down and a big smile, she was ready for work. It didn't take long as the man, helped by a woman, was brought into a room in the E.R. Taking a look and hearing the chatter, she saw a man that didn't realize just how badly hurt he really was. Some staff relieved the man's mother and assisted him onto a bed. As she examined, she spoke to him.
"How long ago did this happen?" she asked him. Realizing how deep the piece of metal was, she didn't wait. A quick scan revealed internal bleeding.
"Austin," she said to one of her team, "put him under. I need to get that out and now."
"Yes, Dr. Nagger," he replied.
She then gently smiled to the patient, "I need to get that out and I'll need to see just how badly it tore you up." She wouldn't allow him to speak, putting a finger softly over his lips and smiling, "save it for later."
While she worked, some staff comforted the man's mother and took a few questions before offering her a place to stay so that she could be with her son.
The man would wake several hours later in a bed, his mid section bandaged. Any pain was removed by his I.V.
