One thing I adore about mainstreem game titles is that the multiplayer, even when it comes to running private servers, usually involve such gameplay styles which makes having any additional rules or admins to apply sanctions rather redundant.
I completely understand that in our case rules are in fact needed, because there is no ''real'' way to ''force'' people to RP. However more and more I see how people tend to deal with ingame problems by applying what is commonly known to be ''ingame consequences''.
Right now, no matter how many admins we add, it still takes months to apply any sort of sanctions. It is no wonder we take matters in our own hands. People shooting up new folk in Penny? Gather up a few friends and rape their faces. People badmouthing you? Get up a few peeps and smack them around a little. A new group doing something retarded? Hire reavers and kill them.
Now I ask you, Discopeeps, do you think we can change the actual gameplay so that we do not need a ruleslist. To have any sort of ingame action have possible IRP and OORP consequences in by itself. Leave admins for only dealing with cheaters and such. I think it would be in their own best interests if the amount of paperwork is cut down to nothing and they can spend more time ingame to deal with situations on the spot.
I cannot really offer a better example than Eve right now. Scamming, piracy, griefing, it all works perfectly well on a community and server so large. But rules in by themselves simply scare off new people. I have seen it firsthand. My friends would love to play this mod with me, but they are afraid (rightfully so) that any mistake they might make would end up with them losing hours of spent time.
As I am writing this up, I am rather tipsy, so I am probably missing some very glaring flaws in such a post. Mostly RP related. So...yeah. Flame away.
