yea - well, but its also about looks in sci-fi. the perfect spaceship is a sphere. but our ships don t look like that cause it d be boring to fly around in bubbles. - the idea of launch tubes and all that stuff is present RL stuff modified into sci-fi... as i am sure you know.
those things look like it so we can recognize them. - even the idea of a spaceship having an "up" and a "down" is stupid.. there is no such thing as artificial gravity other than thrusting at 1g or having a rotating gravitational deck.
tubes are there as some sort of signiture for a carrier - maybe they are not the most efficient or logical feature, but they clearly say " i am a carrier " cause we *know* that this is the way we can imagine it. - real space combat would be boring. - the chance that even a superlarge fleet would meet with another superlarge fleet of ships is so tiny that real space-combat is irrelevant. - so the things we build are a compromise between spaceflight and something the lines of "flash gorden" from the 60s.
and how boring is a carrier that has only a few baydoors "painted" on its side. ....
