Limited number of people modding it because you people limit it.
I have never ever shut anyone out of art and I'd love to see your counter-evidence of someone who was interested in joining and contributing to art being denied. I was never approached nor heard anyone reply about being interested when I asked around. Obviously I've made it very clear that I'm very interested in having others help out, if there was someone I missed I would greatly appreciate it if you forwarded them to me so I could talk to them. Regarding recruitment I'm usually the one nagging about considering people. Since I'm alone, one person cannot work on everything in little time, what with all the things that need to be cleaned up and redone, or new additions like environmental additions or more gear. Why would I even want to prevent help, when having different points of view is actually really beneficial for creative pieces?
(And if you're reading this and are possibly interested in knowing what its like to create FX, feel free to DM me on Discord and I can show you what tools are used - what the general process is like. )
Maybe that was true for the old teams for being picky but I really don't think it applies with this current team, we're pretty open about receiving help - it used to honestly be worse for those in previous teams cause it had some tight chokes of getting stuff OK'd by someone or getting permissions. Nowadays it's more improved with some trust to get the stuff done and some more communication happening.
I'm not really joking about manpower shortage either, I used to be the only person who worked on FX until we recently received another +1, lol. Most people I tried to get interested in doing animation, they didnt see the appeal of doing it, or it felt it was too hard and thus gave up from their lack of commitment. There are plenty of learning resources out there and people are willing to share tricks. It's a matter of whether people are motivated by themselves and knowing what to expect, which also comes back to just generally giving healthy criticism as well as understanding such views. Such as educating what are good techniques, and what you shouldn't do to prevent crashes, make it more enjoyable, what you feel looks better, etc.
I don't think it's fair to assume that people who are really interested in the game and seeing it thrive through trying to help are doing it with malicious intent either.
The only sentiment I agree with you on is that I don't particularly like the historical bureaucracy that Discovery loves for some reason and I've hated it for years - which made the game incredibly hard for newer players and players in general hopping through needless hoop. It is the one of the biggest things I've hated about Discovery for the past 10 years actually, along with feedback not being fully taken in. Thankfully its gradually lessening down more and more over time.
And regarding the working on the game, I meant it in a generalised statement for the entirety of Freelancer. There are plenty of games that have no active communities for modding. Don't read into it too hard, it's to say that its good that people out there are still interested in doing stuff and learning how the game works, FL modding could have died out among the other obscure games.
