There are newer games that will start replacing Freelancer though. It's already happening, with things like Eve and X3 Reunion etc. If the source code isn't released FL will get pushed further from the limelight. I can see this new Jumpgate:Evolution being the ultimate replacement for FL, and it's actually an MMO. Let's hope that code gets released and plans can be made, it'd certainly bring a few new faces.
