In plain words, do you think it's doable to make non-vanilla ships with destructible parts if they use vanilla hitboxes?
They don't really have to loose a wing, or a fin, just to die to a nuke.:P
From what i gathered... not only you need to assign the HPs, but also the DPs which i suppose stand for destructible parts or something like that. It's a dummy object just like the HPs except they seem to be assigned to specific ship objects. Now the CMP must be divided into the number of parts you want your ship to have. In my case I added 10 different parts. as in the normal centurion (root - the main hull; wing_starboard;wing_port; fin_bottom; baydoor; glass; engine_starboard; engine_port; fin_top_starboard; fin_top_port) the only difference from the centurion is that i split the fin_top into 2 as logical by the design.
I mimmicked the centurion's DPs and HPs exactly with only some alterations in position for the wing top cannons , added the second fin_top, and removed the turret (for some reason the titan's turret gets ncluded there)
now... how i figure this works... is that the DPs will somehow interact with the sur and cmp groups. since i used a vanilla hitbox.. it does work..and i suppose that if i made my own version of the broken wings... it would work too. what i'm not sure is what will happen after i add my custom sur file. most of the shapes are complete along with the cannon hitboxes and mine / cm layers and ...well everything you can equip.
now everything seems to boil down to namming conventions here. I must figure out how to name my hitboxes and how to assemble them in the sur. I haven't looked deep into that yet. my hitbox shapes for the sur are VERY basic just as they should be, mostly based of boxes. as soon as i know how to group them and with what names... i should be ready to compile the SUR.
I'm describing it in greater detail so that perhaps some may point out obvious mistakes and spare some of my time. and if i'm right... hope they can confirm that.
but respondign to your question... technically yeah... you can most definetly use break up parts if you use a vanilla sur and have the rest properly set up. I did that as i showed above. of course if you go this approach.. you should make sure that the sur file you use from vanilla even so slightly resembles your new ship or that may lead to awkward hits and misses (thinks of a huge ring shaped craft with the patriot hitbox right inthe middle:P)
