Road of Torment and Heroism

[font=Palatino Linotype]The room was scarcely lit, with the occasional ray of sun managing to pierce the dark blue silk curtains on the window.
Posters of fighter spaceships with guns blazing and the occasional scarcely dressed female body grazed the light yellow walls of the spacious room.
Suddenly, the small, but amazingly annoying alarm clock started buzzing incessantly, in a regular rhythm which seemed to have the same effect as a hammer thumping inside one's brain.
The person sleeping in the bed stubbornly refused to wake up, unaffected by the sounds.

The clock produced it's ear wrecking chirp for half a minute, when the young man finally gave in, flinched a bit, coming to consciousness, and then blindly searched for the source with his hand, frantically tapping around himself. He finally found it, and smashed it clear off the nightstand with a triumphant flick of the wrist, and then just pulled the bed cover over his head and turned back to his endeavor of laziness.
After about half an hour, a man came up the stairs, knocking on the room.
It took around 5 good bashes on the door to make the young man finally get out of bed and open the locked door.
He flopped over to the door, turning over the key.

"What do you think you're still doing up? You know today's the day you ship out to training?!"

The young man bashed his open hand on his forehead, realizing it was today.
His eyes said it all, he did not need to say anything. His father just sighed, watching his misfortune, and headed down the stairs.
He leaped towards his bed, frantically dressing his pants, running down the stairs with one leg inside the pants and trying to put the other one into submission while jumping down the stairs lined with black cloth.

He somehow managed to get downstairs fully dressed, and threw a quick gaze at the clock. He had just 25minutes until departure, and he knew he had to get across half the city to get to the spaceport landing pads.
There wasn't even time for breakfast, he just grabbed his bag with all the belongings, which would be the only thing he'd own for the next two years. Provided that he passed all his training, that is.

He rushed out, his father already waiting in the speeder, and they headed out in a big hurry.
They came just in the nick of time, the ships were just departing.
The entry ramp was just beginning to raise, when he ran in, threw his papers at the dockmaster, and barely got into the ship, fastening his belt in a panicked hurry.

The ship swooped up in the air, the bulkheads squealing in rebellion under the pressure of the colliding force of the engines and the gravitational force of planet Manhattan, which was stubbornly trying to pull the ship back.
He sighed in relief, and prepared for his journey.
