That's a pretty good article concerning the fact that you can't expect fiction to abide by real world laws. Or at least any we know of.

In any case, I'm guessing missiles could be propelled with some kind of solid hydrogen booster? Plasma and lasers definitely don't work the way they are depicted though, and I've never heard of tachyon outside of Freelancer.
