[font=Arial]To start of I should say that I did play Jumpgate Classic (Newtonian Physics, no autoaiming), where the different fighter classes and the bomber each had their specific maximum speed set in a manner that actually made each class viable for it's role.
Now I'll first list the Speeds I had in mind, and then discuss the effects those changes should have overall:
[font=Fixedsys]Class ............. [color=#66FF99]Top Speed ... Good vs ................. Notes
Scout: ............ 230 m/s ..... Scout, LF ............... i.e. Arrow
LF: ............... 220 m/s ..... Scout, LF, HF ...........
HF: ............... 210 m/s ..... LF, HF, VHF, Bomber .....
VHF: .............. 200 m/s ..... HF, VHF, SHF, Bomber ....
Freighters: ....... 200 m/s ............................... for reference
SHF: .............. 200 m/s ..... VHF, SHF, Bombers .......
Bomber: ........... 190 m/s ..... SHF, Caps ...............
Gunboat: .......... 150 m/s ..... VHF, SHF, Bombers, GB ... for reference
CR, BC, LC: ....... 140 m/s ..... GB, CR, BC, LC .......... for reference
Transports, Liners: 140 m/s ............................... for reference
BS: ................ 90 m/s ..... CR, BC, LC, BS .......... for reference
Please note that the "Good vs" for cap ships might be a tad 'guestimated', while the GB and other Capital ship speeds, as well as the Freighters, Transports and Liners are added as reference.
"Top Speed" references to Thuster-To-Speed, with the exception of the Battleships who have no thrusters but an impulse speed of 90 m/s.
[color=#FFFF99]Before replying, please bear in mind this post is about applying speed changes only! Other ideas - especially about Bomber nerfing other than speed, adding an explosion radius to a SNAC, etc. please discuss about in a seperate topic!
I also did check with our resident guru if those changes can be implemented without breaking the speed hacker detection script before even bothering to post this! It is doable!
From my point of view, and with my experience from Jumpgate classic, these changes would allow Fighters to run down a bomber, and each lighter Fighter class can run down the next heavier one.
Would this influence the bombers survival? It sure would, as a bomber won't be able to easily keep his distance to a fighter while trying to blow up a target, or when having done this and now trying to get away.
And as an example, for a successfull raid on a transport convoy, you could then use i.e. 2 HF, 2 Bomber, while the defenders will likely use 2 LF and 2 VHF.
In the fight the LF would go after the HF who go after the VHF who go after the Bombers who go after the transports
You get the idea
Please discuss and point out anything I might have missed.
