I have played a mod where they did that, and it seemed to loose allot of the games flair. While model still played a huge role with the ships performance, every class having the same stats got boring quick. Right now discovery is fairly well balanced.
My only area of complaint is the whole transport versus bombers scenario. For most transports it almost impossible to survive one. The concept of this is actual quite sound, bombers blow up big things. Simple. The problem to me is their prevalence. I would like to see them loose the ability to carry CD's, or have them restricted to certain lesser CD's, so that the class becomes team oriented for piracy or smuggling interdiction.
The fun has completely left trading because no matter what I am forced to pay / hand over my cargo unless I am within 10 k of a base. That gets a little frustrating to us almost exclusive transport pilots over time.
