1. use missiles all over the model to make sure that missiles dont pass through the model
2. using a justice mk 1, get someone else to park themselves in a mako shieldless while you run over the entire model with the justice mk 1 as a tracer, and make sure no shots pass through
3. fly into the model, from every angle, make sure that your ship rebounds from the mako, where the hitbox should be, instead of allowing you to fly inside the model. (collision detection)
4. fire at the local npcs, they can sometimes help with testing what with the ramming, missile spamming cap + normal patrols, etc.
Thats what the "Regression testing in progress right now" means. I'm identifying eventual flaws, so I can tweak the hitbox, if necessary, this weekend when I have more than the 3 hours I spent on making the sur file yesterday evening.
Currently there is a small flaw in the aft section, where the "extruding pin" of the engine assembly is - If you fire on the Mako from a specific high aspect angle on the stern, the shot wil pass through the engine assembly and first register when it hits the hull from the inside. So I allready know I'll need to redo the aft circular section. Also, I am going to see if I can reduce the number of faces used, since I think the 700+ I needed on this attempt is a bit high, and might affect framerates.
Remember, it's been 5 years at least, since I last touched MilkShape 3d, so those 3 hours was mainly used in assembling the tools, and getting to grip with the new functionality in them. Fortunately I found all my old notes from the editing and tweaking of the Boston Supermod, and the principles learned then in hitbox fixing, still applies.
So for a first effort, I think its pretty damn good, and it just reinforces my previous impression of the "jumping over where the fence is lowest" opinion I've expressed in another thread. Since I got called on that opinion, and people took it personal instead of understanding it the right way : "A bad hitbox is worse than bad balancing stats, since the hitbox WILL be a balancing factor", I just decided to "put my money where my mouth is", so to speak.
