Ever wonder why there are so many Outcast fighter patrols-- hell, an entire military base-- in Tau-23? The only difference is that one involves mining lasers and the other involves money.
Thank you, however, for responding to my point with a valid point.
Ever look at the other bases in Tau-23? Java is nicely hidden away, but, the high-profile BMM installation is bristling with guns. It's a fortress, practically. The same applies to Graves in Dublin. Both of those are still in deep trouble with Outcasts and Corsiars/Mollies, respectively. The other stations that are on the direct path of a major pirate group are in deep trouble according to vanilla RP. Look at Douglas, Elbich, Rugen, Solaris, and Breisen for examples of what happens when you don't have high security. These places are losing more men than they can fit on a kilobyte of roster. Corsair and Hessian attacks are destroying miners left and right and running off with the spoils. Force is a given in the mining business.
Trading is very different from this. Transports don't have to hold a large piece of space to make money, they simply have to keep their general vicinity safe. Often, that is as simply as two or three escorts to stave off pirates before police or navies respond to SOS. That is much different from fighting off pirates to control an asteroid field.
