I'm not home atm, to actually model my thoughts out, but I was thinking that i could place the engines at the base of the circular structures, at the stern, with protective "grills" as it were to protect the base of the ship from the intense heat. where the gap is that was originally intended for the "exhaust pipes". I was thinking of a docking bay for civilian transports, in the space, slightly dropping down and jutting out.

I think that would differ it enough from the films version adequately enough "on paper" at least?:)
