Jeffrey Kerrigan was sitting with some fighter pilots when he looked up to see yet another one walk in. He looked down, then realized that this one was knew. They didn't come often these days as there was a war, and people were starting to see a real downside to the military, so he figured he'd give him a warm welcome. He ambled over to him as Edmund Brackenbury entered. Kerrigan paused, looked up, and decided to instead welcome his best friend first. Salutations were exchanged, and Brackenbury proceeded to the bar.
He came up on the new pilot, and took one look into the bar glass that the new pilot was drinking from. "Leeds astroburn?" Brackenbury asked.
Lieutenant Corvus looked up in surprise. "You know of it?"
"I sure do," Brackenbury replied, "I was stationed there for six months after getting out of the academy. Anyway, I'm Captain Brackenbury of the Battleship Sierra, and here is my friend Jeff Kerrigan, also from the ship. I've never seen you, so let's get you something worth a celebration with a new pilot." Brackenbury then called for mike.
"So, Jeff, where shall we sit?"
"I was having a nice discussion with some of the fighter jocks over there. Let's go back. You joining us then, Corvus?" Kerrigan and Brackenbury walked over there as Raven Corvus got up to follow. They sat next to each other, and rejoined the discussion at once.
"Look all I can say is that five Corsairs came out of nowhere. Luckily, we had a gunboat backing us, so we only lost two. They're both on the Sierra now," one fighter jock was saying.
"And they're doing quite well, may I add," Kerrigan said as he appeared from behind his Dublin stout.
After about five minutes, Brackenbury turned to Kerrigan. "Well, I'm headed to Liberty tomorrow. Make sure the ship doesn't fall apart."
"I wouldn't worry about that. Besides, what are you telling me this for? You know I'm no good at commanding a ship.
"That's true," Brackenbury responded, "in that case, don't fall apart while I'm gone." The two laughed, and rejoined in conversation with the pilots. Amazingly, Brackenbury didn't even have a hangover the following morning.
