Installation of Freelancer for Ubuntu

I suppose I'll at least say how I got this far. I may append/edit if any of you smart folks have tips on how to take another step forward.

From a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10:

Install wine and cabextract:

sudo apt-get install wine cabextract

Download winetricks, install needed workarounds following on-screen instructions:

wget http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/winetricks
sh ./winetricks directx9 directplay dsound msxml3 msxml4

Insert the Freelancer CD-Rom and run the setup program following on-screen instructions:

wine /media/FL_v1/SETUP.EXE

where /media/FL_v1 is the mount point of the CD-Rom

Download FLMM and install:

wine ./flmminstaller_v1.31.exe

following the on-screen instructions.

Download and unzip the mod:

cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Freelancer\ Mod\ Manager/mods
mkdir Discovery485
cd ./Discovery485
wget http://igiss.net/files/Discovery485.zip.flmod
unzip Discovery485.zip.flmod

Run FLMM and activate Discovery485.

I'm not sure why, but Discovery didn't automatically update, so I ran DSUpdate to install update 3.

After running into the sound loop bug, I tried using lame mp3 codec, but after that failed I copied C:\Windows\system32\l3codeca.acm from my windows install to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/winemp3.acm and specifying an override in winecfg. That's easy enough to do with the GUI.

To run Freelancer, I use this script.

About the second and last line: I get better performance with compiz disabled, but others may not ;)

As I said, I can't figure out multiplayer, even after using the directplay workaround.

Also, I tried using the -dx and -dWxH options to use my native resolution but both failed.
