i remember back when i first started and i was scouting around on my corsair, i'd enter a system and ten mintutes later two or three people would log on and start shooting me.

Its very hard to actually discover anything, except at low server pop.
Not entirely true. Perhaps your main problem here was that you were flying as a Corsair. Corsairs have a great deal of enemies. I myself have a freelancer who has every nook and cranny of Sirius mapped: bases, asteroid fields, wrecks and everything. You can map out the vast majority of space just with the right affiliations and some friendly chit-chat with the locals.
