I ran out of reg ammo. I carry 40%AP/40%prem/20%HE and i fired alot that game.
Not sure why some think firing prem ammo is a bad thing. Some tanks like the T69 it is a must or your just useless, and others like say my AT7 i never use prem ammo with 20pounder.
Just wait til you play tier 10s. Nothing but prem ammo flying around.
i have 4 tier 10s (one of which being a rare "premium" m60 and one other one still hasnt been bought as im still waiting for it to go for the 30% discount but i technically consider myself to have it as i have the credits to buy it now if i wanted) but lately i have stopped playing simply due to all the bad teams and people that really shouldnt be in tier5+ tanks

Playing a lot of tier 9 I get into a fairly high amount of tier 10 games, gold is used more often but it's still marginal (at least in my experience, maybe this is different on the US server, iunno).
Personally, I wouldn't load 40% prem shells on a KV-1, 120mm penetration is just fine at tier 5 imo, not because I don't find firing prem shells a bad thing (I do so often, especially on the SuperPershing) but it's eating my wallet away, and it's specially embarrassing when you lose money in a tier 5 match using the KV-1 because you run out of regular ammo and were forced to use gold on M3 Lees and M8A1es. Would make me reconsider my normal to gold shells ratio, just sayin'.

Thing is on NA server lately, i get more tier 7 games in KV1 then i get tier 5s. That is why i got so much prem ammo. As for losing money? Bla...I got 7 prems that support my cash funds, +the 300K for 30Kills a day thing filled the coffers, and now the 5 win 25K 10 win 75K 15 win 150K thing is filling the coffers even more.
I currently own 35 tanks, 36 when 8.8 comes out and my VK3001H gets me another slot/tank. So i worry little about cash flow.
