The Corse are a good faction for lawful trading, smuggling, and mercenary work. By ID, the Unione Corse have a 4.3k cargohold limit and can pirate in the Taus and Gallic Borderworlds.
This seems to fit what you're interested in, so I'll give you a simple overview of current UC relations.
They can trade throughout Gallia, Kusari, GMG, Rheinland, Bretonia, and Corsair space without NPCs shooting at them. Both Liberty and Outcast NPCs fire upon the Corse.
However, player/inRP relations are a bit different than that - technically we don't have a trade permit to go through Rheinland (we haven't bothered to obtain one yet), Liberty is okay with the Corse (and [UC] tagged can use transports in their space), and some Bretonians hate us because we're from Gallia. Corsairs, since they're so distant from Gallia and the Taus, have been left undefined.
Since you seem to be aiming in general for quasilawful factions to fly as, I'll list some more for you: Junkers, Hogosha, Gallic Junkers, and Omicron Supply Industries.
"You see what your knowledge tells you you're seeing. ... how, what you think the universe is, and how you react to that in everything you do, depends on what you know. And when that knowledge changes, for you, the universe changes. And that is as true for the whole of society as that is for the individual. We all are what we know, today. What we knew yesterday, was different; and so were we."

The Corse ID sounds like a change from the generic Junker thingy I originally considered. My only problem is that as you said, it's rephacked hostile to Outcasts and Liberty. That means, the rather profitable cardamine smuggling route comes out of its portfolio. Is there a route which could serve as its substitute?
As for the lawful part, unless I'm mistaken, Gateway cannot trade inside Gallia, given that their parent Houses are at war with each other. I'm not sure whether individual diplomacy overrides that.
However, as I realize, Kusari is currently neutral to all other Houses, including Gallia, with which it has a trade pact (?). Does that mean that if I equip a Samura/Kishiro transport, I will be welcome in every lawful base? It sounds a bit too good to be true, so I'm sure I'm not including a cruical factor or two into my consideration.
I believe the official ALG faction still has good enough rep for trading in most of Sirius and Gallia, unless that's changed in 4.87.
Gateway is also good, and allows you to trade or act as a semi-Privateer against rival corporations outside of Bretonia (like Bowex, GMS, etc), and has access to 5ks, as well as the Shire battle transport now.
You may find it hard to have a perfect uber trader who can go anywhere, and quite frankly....that's boring anyways.
If you are interested into joining an actual player faction, there are a few of them which can go nearly anywhere: OSI (a zoner corp) with a special OSI ID which allows them to dock Whales in House space, or Interspace Commerce; I also recommend LTS (Liberty Trade Shipping), a small start-up IC-affiliated corp with a ZoI all over Sirius, and with some special RP and repping even in Gallia and Rheinland (sometimes).

Unione Corse are against Cardamine, so even if they could trade it, they wouldn't.
As for substitutes, if you count legal and illegal trading, there are tons. However, with the various economy changes in 4.87 along with the apparent buff on trading illegal goods, I am uncertain as to how effective those routes still are. So we'll just have to check them over at some point. Or, once mining is back online (it should remain as profitable as it was in 4.86), hitch a ride with the IMG on one of their convoys. You'll make some money off the ore and have some fun chatting with their group.

I'd rather not join a player faction, as I cannot be sufficiently active, nor do I want to commit with such a thing.
With that in mind, can /all/ ALG vessels travel into Gallia, or is it just for the player faction? If the latter stands, I'm afraid I'll have to look for something else.
Also, if RP-wise the UC is against cardamine, what illegal goods do they deal with?

NOX, Gallic Artifacts, normal artifacts if they'd get their hands on some. Basically they'll trade anything that will yield them profit except for cardimine since it'd fund their enemies.
