Directing trader activity towards lanes - attn all devs

Q: I'm a Zoner, you can't nerf me there are no lanes in Omicrons where I fly, don't do it!
A: Zoners are special case, I'm sure some opinions how to deal with that specific problem will surface later during discussion.

Yeah sure, there are exemptions from normal trading like Zoners, but let's not derail topic by dramatizing special cases which'd be dealt with differently.

If this plan does gain traction, you've got the added benefit of this being a BIG selling point to those Zoner caps that are turning into transports. So there's a fix.

Powertraders are generally accepted as people who find the most profitable route, and trade that as fast as possible to make as much cash as possible in as short an amount of time as possible.

Using Jumpholes, and more so flying 30K off the plane slows down the process of trading, and thus making money.

As Zelot said, there are incentives. Perhaps one solution would be to give more incentives to use trade lanes rather than hobbling others.

Also, change the minds of the culprits rather than mandating something for all. Those traders avoiding all interaction still consider using lanes to offer more risk than reward, so what if you changed the ratio? I guess you could also put really nasty mine, radiation, and asteroid hazards above/below plane so no one could use it as a means to avoid contact.

So far, I havent seen or heard of players going at 30k above the plane or using Jump holes while carrying ores or other normal commodities. Only ones that do so are smugglers and illegal jumpers.

Nerfing the 5kers cruise would be a very big issue with base suppliers, wherein bases are located way out of Trade lanes, and also, supplying bases is already a seemingly tough task. Also, Omicrons doesnt have Trade Lanes.

Another problem is NPC disrupting the lanes. They do it like, once in every system, so if this is the case, we have to cruise to the next TL, and there maybe situations, where we have to avoid hostile Gunboats and fly instead of using Trade Lanes while passing through hostile territory.

Many issues need to be addressed before this becomes a possibility.

Yes Pavel you are correct, this is what needs to be done. No, edgeworlds don't need traders, no, zoners should not have trade routes comparable to house corporations. I salute your vision and insight.

Here's what I propose: let's nerf 5kers' cruise engines to Barge level - low speed, long charge time.

As someone who flies places there are no lanes very, very, very often--

This was not thought out.

Unless you turn my 5ker into a 40ker, this won't fly with me either.

Or I'll just fly my 4.3ker and get normal cruise speed and guns to go with it.

Corporate 5kers could be slowed down to 345 to promote using the lanes as intended. This would also disable the possibilitt to flee into system wall.

Wouldn't affect house-based trading that much.

Make all profitable trade routes dependent on multiple long stretches of trade lanes with no short cuts in between, /encouraging/ ships to use lanes that allow for piracy and/or law enforcement.

Basically already accomplished, where possible. Obviously this is not entirely true for bases that are outside the trade lane network entirely, like Atka, Falkland, Java, PL Kurile. A penalty to cruise speed would also mean an effective penalty to trade with such bases. Do the Taus, Sigmas, Omegas, and Omicrons really need fewer traders? Doubtful.

There are woefully few trade routes that involve taking lanes that are long and uninterrupted enough to facilitate a good amount of piracy - at least on the fringes of house space. Border worlds between house systems tend to have bases like Ames, assorted Freeports, Curaco, Cold Bay, and other places that allow a safe haven for traders to more or less easily run to, usually smack dab in the middle of the system lanes - or in the case of the IMG bases in O3 and O7 (and the RM BS in O7), there are bases all along the lanes.

If you want a way to facilitate piracy without tweaking with cruise speed changes, or massively remodeling lanes, systems between houses should be made to have little or no bases for traders to run to.

Also, with regards to my idea of decreasing cruise speed across the board to proportionally "increase" the size of every system, presumably commodity prices can be balanced to give incentive for trade in systems without lane networks - but there's a reason why all houses developed lane networks for facilitating trade.

I think we should not forget that powertrading in its essence is not a bad thing.
It is the muteness and unwillingness for these players to involve themselves in the RP atmosphere that really ticks people off about them.


I could say I am a powertrader, because I need money for a roleplay character of mine and I simply grind through the process to get it. I take no pleasure in it and would spend as less time on a trader or miner as possible. It should not be forced upon, so any ''nerfs'' will simply have even less of a desirable effect on the willingness for people to sink time into the game at all.
