Ahhh... But what you don't see is that the floor (the outside of the sphere) doesn't go on forever, if it did then you would have to either make an infinitely long model (not possible) or make a huge model like Digital Anvil did with the outside of the sphere (which was mostly a repeating texture on a flat surface.
Gotta love illusions.
But anyways your idea is possible its just a matter of who wants to make it, after all the model making would be pretty intense unless you just want a bunch of repeating buildings.
We can't tell the system to kill anything after a certain distance. Game hardcodes, differs, and generally uncontrollable.
Second, the Dyson Sphere background.. Is just that. A background. You fly and fly, but you'll never reach it.
The floor, as has been said, doesn't stretch for infinity. Also, its not buidings. They are blocks. Buildings are infinitely more complex. Especially with docking points and everything. Plus the Dyson Sphere floor is an object. We'd either need an object for each 'building' so we can place it all. Or we need an object for every planet we do this on, that contains the buildings in a unique setting for that planet.
In short, entirely too much work for the payoff. The atmosphere would be little-used after a short while, after all the hype dies down and people go back to normal routines. The only time I'd spend the amount of time it'd take to make this, is if I were being paid to do it. I mod for Discovery for free as I like making things people use and things that are included into this mod.. This wouldn't satisfy that. It'd be an oddity after awhile. Like the Marsflyer, and thats not the outcome I like to see with my work.
If someone else wants to attempt this, they can go ahead and do it. I'm simply stating the problems someone will have in making it, plus it can not be made by one person, unless that person learns system modding, coding, moddelling, hardpointing, and texturing.

Have 4 or 5 bases on the planet...... and rest basically landscape.
Even if it was possible to make someone die after going a certain distance (which isn't as Dab said) I don't think many people will enjoy flying out to explore a bit then suddenly explode with no warning (reminds me of Halo 3 and its hundreds of death barriers). The only I can think of that would mimic your idea is a mine field, a very BIG minefield around the end of the city scape but that's no fun.

Exactly. The amount of work that would have to go into this would be, well, insane.
But it is possible, just a question of who wants to do it.
Maybe someone could make a revamped Dyson Sphere for the Keepers (with the docks in the floor that work).
It wouldn't be as bad as making a whole new city for each House faction and you could still mess around with the idea.
Here is the killing factors. Each of those buildings must have a SUR (Hitbox). Custom SUR have issues with other ships being able to pass through them if you hit at the correct angle. No a big problem in relation to ships, but with large structures it could be an issue.
The next killer is space. To have a full and realistic NY you would need a ton of skyscrapers, each one is likely to be its own object. FL has a limit in how many objects it can render before crashing occurs and this will put you dangerously close to that limit. In addition the poly count would be extrem making it infeasable to players on older machines.
So yes it can very much be done, but is it worth the time to make and then debug?
the BSG mod did it with New Caprica i dont see why say one planet say a war raveged one or something cant have it done something to keep the pollys low
i have seen this theory that blackstarr has it is in an actual mod you know?
im not sure what its name is but i know where this mod can be found its 356mb's in size and it can maybe help you guys out?
You dock on the planet and BOOM! your suddenly floating above a city and an ocean and there are dockable ports on the planet... if u want the link PM me and ill give it to you guys if u want it, maybe it will give u a few nice ideas this theory is true and possible just keep on working on it and who knows? then each planet can be actually explored...
