I like the roleplay setting as well. The fact the game isn't pure RP is also a big plus as conflict can be solved more immersively thanks to gameplay rather than people writing words and saying "X dodged the shots skillfully. Get good, kid." ad infinitum.
There is something magical about this community. First of all, you are playing a game where you can decide the fate of the world you are in. But also, we have one of the most diverse communities of any game I’ve ever played. I constantly have the opportunity to learn so much about the world by meeting new people.
On top of that, there’s something very special about being able to fully put yourself into the mind of your character through RP.

In fact, I will rather stay home and chat with you cool bunch in Commune chat rather than to go out and celebrate Serbian NY evening. It feels once more like SR chat. And there are some oldies back, like David here.
So yeah, that basically keeps me around. That cool bunch of nerds.

My favorite, longest running character in existence started out in Freelancer, and it's hard to fit Ozei in anywhere else. A medieval port of him in a D&D campaign really didn't work as well as I had intended.
I also like how this is the one and only game I know of where anything even close to SRP's exist, not to mention there's the appeal of One-of-a-Kind SRP Ships. I may not own one, but I love running across them in-game.
It's neat that players can make impacts on the game that will last for the rest of the server's life time, or at least a good long while. Whether it's terraforming or naming a planet, getting a faction to take control of a base inRP, or even something as simple as making it into the game as a ship wreck or rumor, the possibility to immortalize oneself in Sirius is awesome, and something I haven't seen hardly anywhere else.
The biggest thing for me however, is the many chances at random RP. For some reason, I find it far easier to just strike up a conversation with a random stranger than I do in settings such as World of Warcraft or Elderscrolls Online. I think part of it is that players have ships, rather than faces, as avatars, so social anxiety doesn't seem to affect me. The other part of it is mostly because when I bump into another person on Discovery in-game, my brain goes *Gasp* "Another person! Wow!" whereas in WoW or ESO, players are far more common, and many of them will blow you off without so much as saying hello.
RP comes easy to me in Discovery.

Nothing brings out the freedom of space travel as Freelancer and Discovery is a community I've grown attached to. I've spent more time with this game than any other.
I started here as a child and saw myself becoming a full grown adult in the time I've been playing this game, I guess it's like that special gift someone gives you in your childhood that you hold on to until death does you part.
