The most populated place is Liberty mostly. It's a hub where many traders pass and it's relatively easy to get an escort gig in there.
If you happen upon the Taus, know that there's some stuff to do also. The Outcasts have recently issued a bounty on the Colonial Remnant, and you can make a good buck trying to kill some of us.
I'd prefer that you don't,:P, but no hard feelings if you do.
While we're on the subject, there's a lot of bounties throughout Sirius, keep an eye on this following link to know what bounties and contracts there are. http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showforum=55
Anyways, I recommend going throughout Sirius and work can come to you.

As for codies, A.K.A. codenames, or codename weapons. They are prototype weapons which are in-RP hard to find.
Examples are the DIAMONDBACK, ARCHANGEL, HAMMERFALL, TWILIGHT, etc. etc.
You can find them in special wrecks hidden all over Sirius.
They generally offer more damage, but are expensive, harder to find yourself if you're not buying, and have a slightly slower flight speed than most other weapons, but it's nothing too tough.
Generally, they are a good thing for non-affiliated characters, if you can afford them or find them.
But until you get a better ship than the Falcon, I recommend staying with normal weapons.

As for ship, I can recommend the Eagle(Very agile heavy fighter, awesome stuff.), Roc(Civilian Bomber), and the Kingfisher(Heavy fighter, pretty sweet thing, looks good, handles good.).
They'd cost you around 2-3 million though, not counting weapons and armor upgrades.
