A week ago a jewel thief disrespected/attempted to kill two officers by trying to run them over as they approached his vehicle. They both shot him in the chest. Another time some thugs were mouthing off to the cops and they just came at em with nightsticks and provided a thorough beat down. The officers were were put on leave for a few days and returned to their jobs. Disrespect a cop here and expect some hurtin'.
As an added thought, I would think there would be a lot of variety based on House setting. A Kusari dealing with the KSP seems like the relationship would be different than a Libertonian and the LPI.
Of course, that doesn't mean the police shouldn't respond in turn. That's what makes things fun.

One thing I always wanted to do was to get arrested. It will be an interesting role-play opportunity, maybe I should do it with the LPI because I know you fellas' have done it before with some other people.
If you actually properly RP being "arrested", go ahead and retire that character because he's not gonna get out in a reasonable timeframe. Especially in Liberty, I hear those courts are really backed up...
The problem of people not listening to the police is because police have no power. No, really, they don't. They can go from "talk to the guy" to "blow him up!" and nothing in between. You can't deny docking rights, you can't arrest the ship captain when he's on the ground, you can't restrict his right to buy/sell commodities, nothing. And since death is so cheap in this game, the police are pretty much out of luck unless they're dealing with a cooperative RPer, which is quite rare.
Been sifting through rumours around Liberty recently and it does seem like there's a lot of disrespect/resentment between the general populace and the LPI, respectively.
One of the great things about being in the LSF is when you get insulted, the person(s) responsible go, coincidentally, missing and are never heard from again...
Well that's how I wish it was sometimes...
A conversation from the bowls of Alaska:
Smuggler robot dude: *14 K away*
Me: Approaching vessel identify yourself immediately
Smuggler robot dude: "Define trade routes"
Me: Just get out of here, I don't know anything about them.
Smuggler robot dude: "Define ***."
Me: *sigh*
Anyways I guess we have to take it until they start shooting at us for whatever reason.

Congratulations, you just got your head bashed in with a nightstick and five-to-ten in prison. Yes things in space are a bit different than here in the real world, but here on earth you wouldn't think of insulting a police officer to his face. Or flashing your headlights and flooring it.
I dunno, it's just something that bothers me.
Cops aren't incompetent fools (most of the time). They belong to a highly-organized police force that has the man-power to respond to most pirate threats with overwhelming force. So, might wanna show a modicum of respect. I dunno. Always blows me away how the pirates call us 'pathetic' and whatnot.
Respect is one thing, but the behaviour that you describe as OORP is really not.
I actually work for the police and I can tell you that aggression, insults and pursuits are a daily occurrence.
Being an ******* to the authorities, if you're so inclined in the first place, is actually very in-RP behaviour.

Great ... now we gotta deal with the role play police and the thought police.
