One wonders why there aren't a bazillion loljunkers running around in Scavengers pirating miners...
As far as my experience tells me, scrap mining around New London has been one big, happy, occasionally sweaty and man-funky party.:)
Unprotected miners = instant money.
Found a miner sitting in Kansas. Cruised in open throttle, tractored in about 20 million worth of Iridium in one go and cheesed it. Was halfway to Puerto Rico before he even noticed his ore was missing.
.....then I did it again an hour later to the same guys.
' Wrote:EDIT: A note on pirates selling ore: Most pirates can't land on the bases where the ore is bought. Pirates will need to sell the ore through a third party. For many pirates selling the ore to zoners or junkers will be necessary to convert the ore into cold hard cash. Your profits might be halved as a result of this but this is intentional.
' Wrote:I for one won't be hiring escorts, I got pirated by a whole group of people and they would have destroyed me before the escorts could have killed one... so basically escorts are useless to me. Plus I don't really like sharing profits (sometimes I will).
Yaaarrr! *cough* I mean that's absolutely your choice. I don't mind if miners don't hire escorts. I do mind when people complain with // in game or on the forums when they are pirated because the piracy is 'unfair'.*
The other difference between you and the pirates is that when a pirate is destroyed they're out for 4 hours. When a miner is destroyed the "trader" exception applies and they can come back to continue mining.
*note: demanding 100 million credits would be unfair.

They are high so that miners can afford to pay escorts or pirates a reasonable amount of money.
Do not complain if you are pirated, hire escorts. Two bombers can destroy multiple transports pretty easily.
Too right
Too Many greedy miners dont want to pay up for escorts
Easy picking for the pirates. Made a shed load of cash pirating miners in Penn over the last couple of days. :yahoo: They dont want to work together, with the exception of DSE who are doing it right, or pay for protection. Man even seen other miners shooting each other up for the cargo and flying off too sell it. Bloody hilarious but they are doing me out of a job
Hire some protection and dont complain when we want too pirate you as you make so much cash mining these days.
I found out about the mining system just few days ago. I created 3 Kruger chars and went mining on Elbich Mining Station. Surprise, nothing falls out the asteroids.
Than i created a new miner, with a small ship and went to another location on Rheinland. Start mining there and it works. I tried to get some others to mine along but reactions was, "Too boring", "too slow", etc. So this miner is insane because he hasnt company.
Well, i just wonder when my Krugers will have the same opportunities has my indie miner.
Mining is fun, Trading is fun,.....when doing it right
My mining faction has some manpower issues sorta, it's getting better, but mmh. I don't typically 'hire' escorts, but instead use other miners with swapped characters, prefer to mine for enough to fill a 5k with a friend, once we're full, he swaps to escort and I'm in the 5k. This is not as profitable, but extremely fun and a nice profit, if just for one run only (lose efficiency by moving back without there mining still being done).
The trick to escorts is not to protect, but to prevent, also make note of the pirates names, file 'reports' to your local police (curse you 11/10 for not screenshotting that guy!), get your escort to clear the guys out of the way.
I should think that all the guys with indie miner IDs are fair game for escorts even without the transport they're protecting within scanner range, despite the restrictions on the corp ID's saying 'protect only' and not hunt down. It's just how escorting has to be.
@Markam Sowwy boss, we was gettin' shot! Now, maybe I do have a SS of that encounter, but, I think I mentioned his name on BMM chat. However, the catch is that I was overconfident of my Shire. Guy proved me wrong, I lost the cargo. We move on.
@OPG Ivan Yes, WE saw you too. Will see you again, I'm sure of that.
I'm a trader. A DSE official faction trader and I don't mind being pirated.
Let me say that one more time: I don't mind being pirated.
Here's what I DO have a problem with:
Twice now I have been pirated by players who have IDs that, as far as I can recall, do not allow piracy. One was a Freelancer ID'd player and one was a Miner ID'd player. The ships were questionable as well; one of them pirated me in a GMG transport. Furthermore, while I will admit that it is technically within the rules, I do not consider a demand for ALL my cargo to be reasonable in terms of RP or gameplay in most scenarios (well-RP'd Xenos are a noted exception). In both these instances, these lolpirates demanded ALL of my cargo with only minimal RP.
Furthermore, the contention that most pirates cannot sell the ore themselves is preposterous. Most pirates I've seen were neutral to me and I am green with all lawful Liberty factions and red to all the unlawful ones since I am a DSE transport. Most of the pirates I have seen in Liberty lately have shown white on the scanner. If they are white to me, most likely they can land and sell the ore as well.
In the past, I have interacted with inappropriately ID'd pirates before. I did not report them as I could have. I RPed with them if they showed a willingness to do so. I gave them money as demanded. Only afterwards have I informed the pirate, via PM, that they might want to read their ID closely and make any changes they feel are appropriate in case they run into a less understanding player than myself. In those instances, the response from the pirate has been positive.
I like the fact that the new mining system encourages both cooperative and adversarial player interaction in the game. What I don't like is the lolpirate epidemic we seem to be experiencing in Liberty. A system that leads to more player interaction should also lead to more RP. While it would be nice to assume that the former implies the latter, I think we can all see that this is not the case.
I am not sure what the solution is, although I have a few ideas. One suggestion is that as soon as you mount an ID, your reputation is automatically adjusted accordingly.
But pirating by players with the wrong IDs has to stop.
Notice to pirates: If you make a reasonable request and RP with me you will get exactly what you want with very little resistance on my part. However, if you request ALL my cargo, or offer little to no RP, I will refuse and allow you to destroy me, leaving you with scraps.
The Miner ID allows the player to demand ore, i.e. pirate ore. This is similar to various company IDs which allow a limited form of piracy between competing companies.
The Freelancer ID does not as far as I know.
