the idea is that freighters are for newer players.
people who mount Transport Shields are taking advantage of a serious difficulty in programming, ie: there is only one type of shield above the VHF shield: Freighter. so, everything from the rhino to the juggernaught has the same type of shield, an they are all squeezed into 10 classes.
its an exploit.

You unreasonably limit the class with that sort of eyes-shut approach to an entire class.

Exploit my ***.

Show me a Rhino with a transport shield equipped. The Rhino can mount a level 1, 2 or 3 Freighter Shield, not a level 7 (transport) shield. Prove me wrong.

There are LF shields. There are HF shields. There are Freighter Shields. The first two are easy to understand. The last one was split up so cap ships and traders could have bigger shields. Freighter shields level 1-6 are weak sauce, Freighter shield class 7 is the Transport shield, class 8 is gunboat, 9 is cruiser, 10 is BS.

If the Turanic and the Camara weren't meant to have Transport shields (level 7 freighter shields), then they would be restricted to level 6 freighter shields, don't you think?

I've wondered about this too. Once upon a time, I flew a Raiders Freighter with a beefy transport shield and felt guilty about it. I feel pretty invulnerable in a train with that shield, even more so when I'm a tiny target as well. Personally, I've decided not to use those shields on a freighter even if I can.

And I think that the transport shields are too strong in general.

The Turanic is large and turns like a train, the thing needs a fat shield or it is useless. I tried to use it as a pirate vessel for a while, it was fun, but a container transport with best guns will hit you and knock your shield down about as fast as you can take his shield down. If the Turanic were as nimble as the Kushan then I could see feeling gulty using a transport shield on it. But, fact is, the Kushan can't mount one so, The Force is in balance...

I agree that the 70,000 point transport shields are too big though, no matter if they're on a freighter or a transport. Those shields are why you don't see anyone pirating in less than a gunboat. Drop them to 50k for starters.

My understanding is expanding exponentially.
It seems to me that Unselie implied that there are different "rules" that would somehow affect the way freighters and transports are treated by their pilots or by pirates. Am I reading too much into it?
I guess I am confused as to whether there is any substantial RP difference between a freighter and a transport, aside from the server rule prohibition of Neutral ID owners using transport class ships. Is that the only difference, or is there something else?

Lets not even get into the Junker ships with transport shields mounted...

They are small enough to dodge fire, and when they do get hit, their shield is really tough.

the rules relate to which Id you can use....
most factions can fly freighters, only a few can fly transports....

By ships I assume you were alluding to the CSV and the Collector? The CSV can use a transport shield but it has no offensive power and a tiny cargo hold so who cares. And the Collector can only mount heavy fighter shields.

I sure wish you had been there to see me yesterday when I was chased all over Hudson, into Bering, back into Hudson, and finally escaped after the terrorist broke off when I jumped through the gate into Hamburg. The Turanic handles like a drunken ox, and that terrorist's Crow fighter had no problem at all dropping my shield whenever he got within range.
I can handle most NPC's in the Turanic, but even a rookie player in a fighter ought to have no trouble at all staying out of sight of its main forward guns. With only the regular freighter shields, attempting to switch to turret view means just one thing: you die. With a transport shield, the Turanic at least has a fighting chance. Otherwise, you have little choice but to run as soon as someone starts shooting at you. But then, I'm sure there are plenty of players who would like nothing better than to outmatch their opponents in weapons by multiples, and not even have to worry about return fire coming back at them. I'm not accusing anyone, I'm just saying that the super weapons everyone is mounting on fighters requires a corresponding evolution in shield tech for the targets. Until terrorists in fighters stop using nomad cannons and codenames, I am going to feel a really strong pull to mount the most heavy duty defensive armor and shielding that I can find.
The main thing on my mind is, does that violate RP conventions? If so, how?
