I attached blueprints as image plains and started modeling it in polys plains, adding thickness and converting to sub-d surfaces to get the nice edges. I converted it back to polys after finnishing to combine and render them.

Maya is great for modeling and animating. 3DS Max is great for Freelance generalists that need results out of the box. Maya is much more powerful in a pipeline because you can customise almost everything about the program.
