It isn't a military vessel. It's a frontier vessel. It's not "weaker", just "different". Also downright scary in the right hands... so many missiles...
It's an exploration boat, yes, but it is designed to handle heavy combat as well. It handles combat quite well, too. Yes, you have to pay for upgrades tot he armor, but it's firepower is well worth it. CapAU it and give it the right weaps and it's a beast.
I took out swarms of fighters with only cap2. It's fine. (though it does tend to get cappwnd very easily)
Also, why would anyone use Solaris turrets, when normal 4.00 refire turrets work just as well? Just saying.

BECAUSE ROLEPLAY!!!!!!!one!!! Remember kids, chanting "RP" at stuff always makes it make sense!
Actually, the Democritus can take one helluva beating. It can't shoot for beans, but I've never seen one die that tried to get away. So... you can survive PvP, you just can't win:P
I've been using the Kusari Explorer for 2 years now and I have absolutely no complaint about it. It's an RP ship meant to explore not combat but even the odd time I've been in combat with it I still find it an effective ship. It's huge, sure, but it' has a massive powerplant with 7 turrets most of which have an extremely generous turret arcs. It's powersupply allows you to take advantage of the more energy hungry generic turrets out there and thus can pack an extreme punch and it was already mentioned that it has a healthy dose of bots and bats. I've flown all over Sirius with a Kusari Explorer and encountered all types out there and as I said, I have no complaints about that ship.
I just picked one up for my Freelancer. It's a nice little rig, performance-wise. Throw in a mix of Zoner turrets, basic turrets and a hefty cap armor enhancement and you've got a force of nature to pilot.
My only "complaint" is that it's rather homely. Hideous, actually. And not in an endearing way.
