that's where making them all on an even playing field would come in handy. if every ship were basically equal (combat wise) then the only thing left would be to RP them...

right?
That will also make the whole mod incredibly boring....you'll learn one combat tactic.. and use it on all ships.
Igiss says: Martin, you give them a finger, they bite off your arm.
I'm ok with the there being rock->paper->scissors effect but in general the lf's struggle because they have been capped whereas their natural prey (VHFs) have been on steroids, each release making them bigger and better. I've flown most of the LFs cos they are my ship of choice and they truely suck.
I reckon there should be more LFs which can hold the LF lvl10 shield (surely not too much to ask) and a power plant to fire 4 lvl 9 guns almost constantly, together with a CD. Additionally a boost so that they are faster than everything else (even if only by 10 units) would make them soooo much more useful.
You might even see experienced players using them.
There are two reasons that I don't fly Light Fighters.
1:
Almost anywhere I go, there is a capital ship, mostly gunboats. This has been the case for a long time, and it is well known that the Light Fighters can't put up a fight against a gunboat, even three of them.
2:
As a consequence of (1), the Light Fighter class isn't a multi-role class. Often, pilot skill compensates for a lack of maneuverability if you know how to get the most out of your regular VHF. A role which my wingmen use often in the Very Heavy Fighters is fire support for bombers. They also play the part of an escort. Light Fighters only do the escort part, they are pretty much useless as fire support, as their damage output is so low.
However, I do dispute the fact that a person who knows how to fly a VHF will beat a person who knows how to fly an LF. An LF pilot has to be very patient, like a VHF pilot versus a bomber in 4.83. One mistake by the LF and it's all over. However, you can take on a large amount of VHF's in an LF and win. It just depends how good you are at dodging, and there are very few people who can consistently without, crucially, being read by the enemy and countered.
Rock/Paper/Scissors is the fundamental balance component in my view.
@Jinks -- Fly it before you call it "agile". And while I do respect and like the fact that it has CD + Torp, the tiny guns make it worthless as a "pirate ship". On top of that, even NPCs easily shred that class 6 shield. The thing needs an upgrade unless it's a starter ship, which it can't be in it's current location of sale.
It wouldn't take too much to make this a fun ship, but as it is it's useless. No amount of RP is going to put people in that ship as it is.
"To gain a hundred victories in a hundred battles is not the highest excellence;
to subjugate the enemy's army without doing battle is the highest of excellence."
i have had it a few times ... tried it 3 times ... and i still consider it agile - but of course agility is very subjective. especially since there are a few things that have to be taken into account. firstly - of course it feels agile, when you have been sitting in your zoner juggernaut before .... secondly, the point of view is very close to it, so a movement appears to be quicker than when the camera view is far behind the ship. ( try to compare a turranic light fighter, which takes up around 1/3 of the screen in the behind view - and then a griffin, which is much more zoomed out )
That's the price you pay for agility. You have to be on the ball all the time. You can't afford to stop ducking and weaving in an LF, ever. They require a lot more concentration and effort from the pilot than VHFs. I enjoy flying both, but LFs are harder to fly and rightly so. Once you master them however, you become the most annoying thing in the galaxy for your enemy to come up against.
However, some of the LFs do need a rebalance... The Decurion of the Corsairs has maneuverability that doesn't really outshine the Centurion HFs. That's why the Centurion was used against RM... and it did better than the Titans, actually, since it could dodge reasonably whilst mounting torpedoes. The Decurion, however, sucks.
LF MkIIs that are good include the Hussar, Phantom, Tiger Shark, Scimitar and Liberator. I'm not terribly familiar with the others, but I think the Griffin will be decent too.
Basically though, I'm an LF pilot a lot of the time, and I make them work. I don't want to see them boosted. Not the Hussar or the Phantom, which I fly, at any rate. I'm happy with them as they are. Shock! Horror! Did I just say that I don't want some of my favourite ships given a boost!? Yes, I did!
