<strike>The largest weapons manufacturer in Liberty, one of the largest in Sirius, has just been bought over by an independent mercenary?

I demand Mercs get to fly Cruisers.
They can buy companies, why the hell can they not fly Battleships?

Ah yes, because mercenaries apparantly don't make that much money.
So they buy a company instead.

I can see logic working here.</strike>

Apologies, gut instinct reply.

It does seem pretty well thought out, it should help bring some life to a part of Freelancer we use a lot, but never actually develop much.

My mercenary paid for less than half of the purchase. It's also a relatively small corporation when compared with the main ones of Ageira, Universal, etc.

My mercenary's independent status shouldn't even be a factor, considering the fact that Liberty's economic structure is not controlled by the government. Thus, anyone buying a company privately will be buying it independently.

As for loyalty or allegiance, my mercenary is actually anything but independent. A lot of people think Mercenary = Independent and disloyal by nature. This isn't true in the least. If you work for pirates, the lawfuls aren't going to hire you, nothing more to it. My mercenary is very patriotic and very loyal to Liberty, where she has lived pretty much her entire life. Nearly all of the jobs done on that character were for the Liberty Navy, Liberty Police, Liberty Security Force, or the IND, a Liberty company. The rest, very small in number, was done for Bretonia, with 1 job being done for IMG.

Also, I'm fairly certain the idea with mercenaries was never that they don't make much money. This isn't even realistic. If you look at current "mercenaries" (who tend to call themselves private security companies or military contractors), they are making millions upon millions of dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now look at a situation much like our current one, expansionist era. Exchange sea and boats for space and starships. During the colonization of the Americas, there were pirates -everywhere-. Consequently, there were privateers and also captains who's job was literally to hunt pirates and privateers for certain nations, being paid large sums for each pirate ship they destroyed, in addition to the large amount of loot they would normally be able to take from their destroyed ship. Successful pirate hunters were generally much more wealthy than the pirates themselves, as well as captains of naval warships owned by the different nations.

Mercenaries have always made large sums of money if they are good at what they do, Freelancer is no different. In turn, those mercenaries and mercenary companies also usually spend that money on a company or invest it in companies, or use it to buy more ships and crew for them, and increase themselves from a single ship to several, making them even more successful, and much like a company with themselves as the CEO.

The issue with mercs using cruisers on Disco, is that people abuse cruisers. Same reason the BHG Core ID doesn't allow cruisers used in house space. It's rules, not to add realism. Also that, except for Corvos, cruisers are military warships of their respective faction, and not sold to people, but used for that military.

Hey, so long as the station doesn't suddenly come under your absolute and complete control in the future... Hmm, come to think of it... that'd be rather stupid, wouldn't it? It's still a station which is affiliated to Liberty, and everybody who can dock there now is basically friendly with Liberty, or serve their needs.

Or to put it bluntly: It's not like Dab would have the capacity to affiliate the station with an enemy of Liberty or something or other without either the navy blowing it to hell or capturing it... that is to say if the hypothetical situation most people are concerned with was indeed true. :P

As you'll read, Detroit Munitions is a company in possession of several facilities on Planet Denver, and headquartered on the Detroit Munitions station.
This is a company, not a station or solar system.

Comparison fail.

Oh, and read the quotes above. You seem to have missed the comment saying "company, not the station" twice.

Not really comparison fail. It's a matter of scale.

One individual buys the rights to a station - plausible
One faction claims sovereignty over an adjacent system - plausible.

That being said...go for it I say. 300m from merc work is pretty good actually, especially an independent mercenary and not part of a team.

Detroit Munitions (The Station) is owned by Ageira Technologies.
While Detroit Munitions (The Company) still operates in it, Ageira Alone holds rights to... doing whatever the hell they want with it.

I think it's safe to say that the company operates free of charge there, with Ageira paying for station upkeep and security.

It does beg the question, though, as to how the profits are generated between the two companies. As mentioned on the infocard, Detroit was successful even before Ageira involvement. They partnered up so Detroit could manufacture more hi tech stuff (Through Military contracts and the such, which Ageira held).

A partnership assumes mutual benefit, and I'd like to talk to you about that, Dab.

So, Detroit Company could operate even without Detroit Station, though i'd imagine if Ageira decided to pull the plug on Detroit Company, it would cause them no end of strife (End of military funding, loss of a huge production facility).

Sorry I'm five days late.

I did discuss the setup with the Ageira members I could get a hold of (Dodike and the other guy).

PM me with whatever you want to talk about. I'm having a lot of computer issues atm, so I can only get on occasionally with a backup, so you won't always be able to reach me on Skype for the next week or two.

Okay so this has taken more a bit longer than originally planned due to computer troubles. I'm still working on the forum, background, and other stuff I can do, but the in-game stuff has to wait till I have my main laptop back.

But to the point of this post;

Detroit Munitions Virtual Visitors Center.
It's still a work in progress. Any suggestions, complaints, etc would be helpful to improve it.

What does owning the company actually do for you?

Forgive me if the info is in the links, I just can't be bothered reading them atm.
