I faced the same problem and there is nothing we can do about it. Forum trolls are part of life, just like sun, air and water. Imagine how hard would it be to moderate trolls out of topics? A lot of them are being so subtle and very often deliver "sucker punches" or "hits from behind". This forum is heavily infested with trolls and we have to deal with it.

Really, the admins don't know what trolling is. They just tack it onto anything that has devious intentions but doesn't outright break the rules. It's their rule 0.0 for the forums, except that they actually enforce it.
Here's how the scholars at Urban Dictionary define it.
Definition 2 Wrote:Trolling is trying to get a rise out of someone. Forcing them to respond to you, either through wise-crackery, posting incorrect information, asking blatantly stupid questions, or other foolishness. However, trolling statements are never true or are ever meant to be construed as such. Nearly all trolled statements are meant to be funny to some people, so it does have some social/entertainment value.
"Trolling" isn't simply "harmful statements". Intentionally insultingbelous statements are "flaming".
Just as bad as trolling is "Feeding the Trolls". This is when people say stuff that they know will prompt someone to respond with a trolled reply and/or replying to comments that are blatantly from a troll. This is especially true when a troll first makes his comment/reply, and (usually many) people respond, either trying to correct the troll, or express anger at the statement. At that point, the trolling was successful and has been fed. When encouraged by success and feeding, trolls often return.
In World of Warcraft, there are occasionally people that blurt out in world chat, "You get your mount at level 40 and costs 100 gold." then immediately signs off.
This information is outdated by over a year; but MANY people respond for at least 10-15 minutes afterwards with either corrections or calling that player a 'dummy', or something similar insulting their intelligence.
Trolling and subsequent feeding. Perfect example.

@OP: +1. Locking (or moving to Flood section - lesser evil but still) a thread that got derailed by off-topic posts is unreasonable. Why not delete the off-topic posts instead? You know, punish the offenders.
Feel free to PM me regarding any grammar/spelling/other language mistakes I have made in my posts.

Or reset they numbers of posts with 25-50% of previous number
That would the be so harsh on poor kids!!! I mean resetting their counters, when they try so hard to raise it with posts like: Inb4block...
I say 1st is a warning, then take off 25% from the number of posts. I bet that a lot of trolls will stop.
Or better yet, just do what I did. Create a trophy. For example, JayDee is a Barracuda Pilot, he posts come crap and gets " Tard of the week," Tard of the Month" or "Forum Troll" signature addendum. I think this will work perfectly. And if someone gets "Forum Troll" sig add, make it it red color.

I'd not refer to those trolls with insults or mockery in this thread or any other. That just encourages people to keep doing it. And not only that, by insulting or mocking you become the same than them, or even worst, because it looks like you want revenge like a spoiled child.

Best example of it, that's an invitation to trolls.
Also, if your thread is being flooded or trolled, PM a moderator about it, ask to get your thread cleaned.
I know the forum is full of bias, and some people will always get their threads trolled/flooded, that's why moderators are useful.
EDIT: Anyone really care about their post counter?
