Saw a story about this just this morning and did a little looking into it. So far, reports are that the quake was an initial 8.6 <strike>and there's been an 8.8 aftershock</strike>, and that both have been lateral crust movements, very little vertical movement so far.
Good news is that means the resultant tsunami will cause a sea level rise in the area only slightly, although it appears warnings have been issued all around the coastal areas surrounding the Indian ocean and they've been moving people away from the coast in Indonesia, at least. Most of the damage is likely to be from the quakes themselves, should things stay as they are.
Fingers crossed, just hoping it doesn't get any worse for you folks. Keep safe, and hopefully we'll see you here again soon. Good luck.
Edit: Continued reading different sources, seems nobody's quite sure on the magnitude of the largest aftershock. About the only consistency is that it recorded as 8+.
