Especially if you use /setmsg for the Do what you Want song.

Calm down a little please. If you reread the OP, you will realize that I wrote "appear to be good RP" not that it actually would be good RP.
Maybe I should have made a more visible implication that my point of view might be biased.
But I'm really glad to see that this thread doesn't get flamed down with hate and bias (yet?:crazy:). And thanks for the input everyone.
Now for some more direct responses:
@Black
I think your system is a pretty good one for those who want to pirate for money.
But not everyone can type fast. I myself can type slow to medium, so I really appriciate the /setmsg command.
If I'd decide to go pirating, I'd probably set msg's 0-9 for different approaches to tell a player to stop depending on his ship and affiliation :crazy:(like 5k hostile corp, 5k neutral corp, miner, etc.)
@Narcotic
Of course they should put some effort into it and I can see your point with the powertraders. But I think that some pre-set messages are still better than a default xmillordie.
So far I've only comlained (inRP and at all) when I was pirated in a freighter as a civilized way to say "you want 80%(180%) of the profit I make in one run? forget it!" which was two times so far.
Oh yeah and I complained inRP about a lolwut Navy-Eagle that "tested" his weapons on me and nearly destroyed my ship before I even knew what had happened :angry:
Unfortunately I have yet to encounter an RP-Pirate personally and not as an uninvolved bystander (<-not sarcasm)
@Puv
That would fall under the point "don't overdo it"
When I had a pirating char this was my thing:
fighters/bombers/cap ships = usually wont pirate unless I'm in a group
freighters = 250.000 - 500.000 credits transports rank 65 - 70 = 1.500.000 - 2.500.000
transports 70 + = 2.500.000 - 4.000.000
Since I type really fast, it's more effective typing out phrases then using a stupid and anti-RP biased set msg macro.
When I do pirate, my demands are thought-out complete sentences.
The more creative the rp,the better the payday from my traders.
Blackvertigo1....How would you pirate a freighter thats rank ,oh,say 80 ?
That type of info has been dealt with before as something the average pirate would't know.Even the Lane Hackers can't access everyones bank account and know what their net worth is.
I use the setmsgs on a regular basis when I pirate. Two reasons mainly. First of all... I type pretty slowly, and have noticed in the past that it messes up the situation quite often. Second... It's a really good way to get things started. Once you have the trader stopped and RP'ing, then everyone relaxes, and it gives everyone more time to improvize...:D
Just because it's a setmsg, doesn't mean you haven't given it some thought. I try to think it all through and create messages for situations that can appear where you have to be quick about it. That doesn't mean that I use them all. 3-4 of them is usually enough. I know there are people who think setmsgs are something that should be locked away, but there are some of us who think they're pretty great.
But sometimes you just run in to traders where it doesn't matter how much effort you put into it. Setmsgs or not. A couple of months ago, I experienced this conversation. Names have been changed to protect the innocent...
Pirate: Cut yer engines, Traders! Don't move! You and I are gonna have a li'l chat!
Pirate: Ladies and gentlemen! Pirate is here to collect the taxes. As long as you pay up, everything will be fine.
Pirate: Don't try to escape! It only causes problems for us all. And we don't want any problems, now do we?
Pirate: Nice cargos you have there
Trader: Maybe more fasta, eh?
Trader: nice cargo, don't have problems, bla bla bla
So you see... Setmsgs or not... It's not always because of the pirate that the RP goes bad.

Rank overrides vessel class. That would be something I forgot to add.
Rank is relative to someones credit worth. If you know what their net equipment is priced at you can reasonably target their credit value.

1st this is meta gaming, and if a single line of your "RP" ever claimed you new my "RANK" in game, and how much i was worth. I would screen it all laughing my arse off, and filing a sanction report. Freaking useless meta gamers.
A level 90 starflee is still a starflee, and asking for 10mil or dai is an arsehole move, and sanctionable.
Also. This topic is utter BS. Been said a billion times. No pirates will listen, no traders will care, and flames will insue. Just RP your own way, or be a dick and get sanctioned. It is the way of Discovery.
PS. If all you consider is Rank for credit worth, what about the 90% of server that dumps all cash every trip onto a storage ship? Tool!

1. I don't know what you mean saying "Tool!".
2. Your life yields to me. I am superior than you. I don't need to explain myself or my techniques.
- What I have said in my first and second posts on this thread is realistic and supports RP.
- By taking in account all the variables it allows me to put variety into every line of RP and every scenario of PvP I am in.
