What most mods do is put beam weapon refire rates to an incredibly high number and have extremely high velocities. (So they hit instantly)
That could cause some issues however. Depending on the effects used, it can look incredibly cheap and just bad looking.
Beam weapons also do not really fit into Freelancer that much. They would however make VERY good anti-fighter weapons. (Instant hit so aiming is relatively simple)
If they were put into Disco, I'd say limit them to battleships and have them have large energy requirements so they can only be fired for at most 1 second.
Don't forget the lag. Remember that with the old chainguns, 33.34 refire was dropping shots and lagging the server. Making that number bigger will make balance depend on player count, and be very bad for lag.
Another idea was simply make the trail look extremely long but that didn't look very good.
Simple idea would be a long trail with a simple + shape (Many star wars mods use effects like that) and a relatively high refire rate (8 or so) to keep it up.
Giving them a high energy use would pretty much discourage them for any kind of prolonged use.
In all honesty, I think we need to add the Prototype Nomad laser into the game. Its already IN the game, but we can't access it. Its level 7, but what if we were to raise the class up to 9, give it damage less than the Nomad Cannon/Blaster, but with a refire rate of 5.something, the same refire rate that most 5's have.

Issue is that lasers go at the speed of light, so you wouldn't even see them usually if you only fired once.
In Freelancer the issue would be that if you fire it once, you wouldn't see it either due to the almost instant speed of it. (Probably the biggest attraction of beams, accuracy becomes far better without velocity calculations)
If you want a sustained beam with the proper speed of a laser beam, you need a quick refire rate. Equal to the speed of the gun.

Interesting Idea.... actually, we culd just up the damage/energy usage to class 9 levels and sell it on... say... the bases in Alaska, maybe some base in Bretonia, and Kansai Reaserch Station in Kusari, and it could be used by the appropriate factions as prototype weaponry.

Also, it isnt the refire rate that's important, it's the projectile speed. A weapon with .5 refire and 500,000 m/s speed would be far more effective than a weapon with 50.00 refire and 400 m/s speed.
With the former, you wouldnt shoot very often but every shot you took would hit dead on. With the latter, you'd waste a ton of energy and a lot of those shots because the enemy would simply dodge them.
Personally, I'd like to see a 'sniper'-style weapon put into the game, maybe for capships only. Something with a slow refire, but every long range and high travel speed - more like long-range artillery than the razors/mortars we have.
It IS lag--this server begins to lag even with 8.33 if enough steady shots are fired with a certain number of enemies.
Make a really high damage weapon with longer range and a very high velocity but slower refire. Then you can hit and get effect without the lag.
