If you let the person whos ship you are docking with decide whether you can dock or not then it wouldnt matter in the first place. You could just make a seperate button for docking and they can just say yes or no.
I'm working on making Freeworlds (my other mod) use this, for their next version.
However, it's not possible to have the little man with the raised hand glow red when that happens.
And no, if the person crashes that has all the people on it, it doesn't kill the server. What happens, is those people that are on the ship, get knocked back to Manhattan.
And to dock on someone, all it needs is to be in the same group, and to type /dock while selecting the person.

If Freelancer was an open-source thing, All the dreams you are talking about here would probably already be done.
The problem is, that the game is -old- -low tech- -unfinished- -bugged- and the possibilities of modyfiing it are not too good. Docking player ships would be possible, but probably with many new problems, bugs and bad things like that...
One thing is the idea. Another thing is the possibility of the idea to become real. Third thing is making the possibility reality. Fourth thing is to watch it for a while, then see if its good or bad.
Personally, I think it is not worth all the work, but thats just me.
I am making it possible for my mod but there is some issues where the account disappears after docking and then moving the ship- then having the fighter login and ....nothing
My bro fixed the problem but we have been to busy to test it again. But It does have it's RP part but it has too much temptation to have a oorp powerplay...

The question stands at, will the rp value outway the technical challenges? It's possible but it would take lots of time and energy. not only would it be a great rp but it would be really cool as well...
Hmm Yes that is the question. For my mod it's necessary due to the adjustments in the ships movements. But in freelancer i can see alot of complaints. People not paying there docking fee...
edit: I can see the possible for Navy military only

I really like this idea a lot! Cap ships have really lost their use in discovery. When 2 bombers are more than a match for one and most of the time will come out on top it seems foolish much of the time to pilot one. However, with addition of this the Cap ships can really become what they are meant to be, a command and supply station as well as adding the fire power they bring to the field. This is needed. The RP it would add far outweighs its possible draw backs. So far as people using it for OoRP means? People will do that sort of thing regardless of this feature. Lets not let the fear of rule breakers hold us back from making this game all it can be! Great idea! So far as allowing things to be sold in these ships that could be really cool as well though Im sure would take a great deal of work. Good Luck everyone!
If the code is out there and being worked on as we speak for other servers, is it possible to mesh it into this game?
Cheers,
EDIT:: Look at the thread about "good reasons to own a capital these days?" you will see that people are becoming disheartened about them. This will breathe life back into their RP and give them use! As should be noted this would increase the idea that a cap ship should have a fighter escort as is realistic.

I really, really agree with you here. Pretty much no matter what we do, someone is probably going to figure out some way to exploit it. However, we can always deal with that problem when it comes.
