Odd, I always thought they were based upon the north Mediterranean countries of Greece, Italy, Spain etc.

Basically this.

The "Hispania" Sleeper ship, had within it, citizens from the Spanish speaking nations, but also citizens of Mediterranean nations, there's nothing that says that the Outcasts and Corsairs are strictly Spanish.

In fact, any Outcast or Corsair characters I've had, have been closer to Italian than anything else.

Ok so in RL both the islands of Malta and Crete are not Spanish Territories, infact Malta is an independent nation that speaks Maltese Language not Spanish and Crete well that's even further from a Latin homeland in that it's Greek!

So I find it stupid that Spanish speaking pirate factions are from places that in RL have nothing culturally or linguistically to do with these pirates.

the hispania contained the mediterranean pirates. Corsairs are originally pirates based on the north african coast. historically, Alexander conquered large parts of north africa and asia. Later, during the ascendency of the city of rome, these places fell to latin speaking people, from which spanish, italian, french and to a certain extent, english are derived. This explains why i can speak garbled spanish/english and communicate with 90% of the mediterranean.

To put it in context, Latin (or spanish-derivative) was a trade language, allowing the transfer of economic and academic properties, in the way that swahili operates in east africa and mandarin in china.

however, this is a space-boat game, and doesn't have to make sense. For example, the majority of the southern states of the us are bilingual - but there are no spanish speaking characters in liberty.

There are many countries/cultures not represented by a house. Where are the space arabs/canadians/mexicans/irish/etc?

Presumably only the richest, most powerful countries in the world could afford to build Sleeper ships in time... and I don't think any country in africa or south america was on that list.

And... I'm just going to stop there, before I risk treading into offensive territory.

Which didn't have their own sleeper ship. They were stowaways on Spain's ship (somehow).

Canadians - banff, quebec

The french Canadians did not have a sleeper ship, nor did the rest of Canada. France did (because we added it, apparently).

mexicans - on hispania

Nope. See Canada.

irish - dublin

Maybe some Irish ended up on Bretonia's sleeper ship but they did not have their own. Or maybe the Mollies are really just Brits that adopted Irish culture.

Which is congruent with the presence of African-descent npcs in vanilla. They exist in the game because they ended up on the sleeper ships belonging to the country they were in or near.
