Take your 3 Light fighters. Pop them up against a missile equipped cruiser.
Ignored the bombers simply because they are part of the SWAT squad etc. Meant to broken out encase of Emergancy, not every minute which is when they are often needed.
I've mentioned before that the police need more authority/duties and the military less... Or at least more defined. Don't allow military to stop smugglers without a police officer calling for assistance first. Maybe say they aren't allowed to fire on any non-terrorist unlawful unless fired upon first or protecting someone else who has been fired upon, though they'd be free to deny them access to jumpgates (not jumpholes). Border security and all. The army doesn't have the authority to enforce laws or arrest people except in very specific circumstances.
I'd say allow police anything up to bombers, but nothing larger. Sure, ideally most police should stick to LFs... But realistically they need much more. Don't limit militaries to no LFs, though.

Seemingly normal day:
I fought in my LPI (indep) character against a 522th battlecruisre for an hour.. or more, while calling for support (God save Gafwmn. Better late than never).
Also fought for a while a gunboat while waiting for support to come. Nukes come in handy for this.
Killed a 522 nova pilot alone when he decided to pop around.
Was killed by a gb with a pair of missiles when i forgot i was in a liberator, and not in my raven claw. Ouch.
Those pesky light fighters are useful. The least, you force the enemy to remain engaged till you call for support. And your mobility guarantees you will not be hit, and can actually arrange support and the like. Something like a close AWACS.
By the way: I discovered a LF can actually cause shield damage to a BC and beat it's regen...
PD: With a little practise im sure LPI officers could be killing machines if required. A swarm of 4 should be able to destroy gunboats. Missiles are not a problem, he focuses on you, missile warning, wait till alarm says it's close.. EK+turn 90deg+thrust. Missile dissapears. And i dont say BPA and the like because i only have experience with slipstream and liberator, so i cant throw opinions on the others.
Bombers are needed constantly. The events in game are not unlike SWAT assignments IRL everytime.
And a missile equipped cruiser? Pah, Liberators say "Yeah right" to missiles. In all my ooRP LPI skirmishes against massive fleets, I never got hit by one missile. The Liberator is a force to be reckoned with.
EDIT: Sounded like I was bragging. Not the case. I just am saying how hard to hit Libs are. Missile cruisers don't pwn them.

Aren't the Coast Guard often considered military?
coast guard aren't military, they're police.
the navy would keep the battleships of the other countries away, and the coast guard are the ones who intercept smugglers - often by calling in the navy to support them with cannoncades
I have an LPI character. A Detective, at that, flying an Arrow Interceptor, because he's a detective and should be able to get in and out rather quickly. But would I rather be flying a Guardian or Avenger VHF? You bet. Though I know I joined the Police and thus should be flying a LF, I've always been more skilled in flying a VHF. Plus, I could be a detective that has the proper armaments to defend himself, rather than the pair of Vengeance Mk V's that most everything doesn't even sneeze at when getting attacked. I hardly come on as that character because I'm just nothing more than some uber Starflea with Level 9 guns and better armour, and I can barely fly a LF with effectiveness. I've always been suited to VHFs and that's where my skills will always lie. But seeing as I probably won't get clearance from the LN to fly such a ship, I'll leave it alone, and come on occasionally just for the RP fun.
Here's an idea. How about some pirates/unlawfuls stick to LFs too? I know that in the VF, at least, we have begun to use Lokis (The Hessian Light Fighter), more than the Odins or Sabres (VHFs). That means that whenever we encounter the military, we're outgunned. If we happen to run into RFP though, a pleasure that I don't believe I've had, we should be on fairly equal footing.
The problem is inflation. If all the bad guys have VHFs and Gunboats, the good guys need VHFs and gunboats, kinda like an arms race. If the bad guys begin to use LFs more often, the good guys will probably use LFs more often.
On another note, I think that we should get HF Mk IIs or do something to give the vanilla heavy fighters a boost. As it is, they are more than useless. The LF MkII has more hull and firepower than the heavy fighter! I want to fly the Stiletto, but currently, the Scimitar has more hull, more firepower, bigger power plant, more maneuverability... there's absolutely no reason to ever fly an HF outside of traveling to get your LF MkII, VHF, Bomber, or Cap.
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a military branch of the United States involved in maritime law, mariner assistance, and search and rescue, among other duties of coast guards elsewhere. One of the seven uniformed services of the United States, and the smallest armed service of the United States, its stated mission is to protect the public, the environment, and the United States economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and America's coasts, ports, and inland waterways.
...
As members of a military service, Coast Guardsmen on active and reserve service are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and receive the same pay and allowances as members of the same pay grades in the other four armed services.
While the don't catch smugglers is a good concept, I think it's a rather bad idea. Smuggler galore. There is never a police character on 24/7. Even if this does promote police activity, smugglers will still be able to get a lot more contraband in.
Smuggler1: 5000 more tons of cardamine....mmmm
Smuggler2: 3500 artifacts...nice...
Smuggler3: lolz..LN can't do anything hahaha =P. Noobs
Smuggler2: Yep...nubs...hah
Smuggler3: Hahahaha LN, look, I wave cardamine infront of your face. HAHAH n00bs.
LN: Where the blazes are those LPI officers?
' Wrote:TDL Dark pretty much hit the nail on the head..
So, how about the military is responsible for the big shipments, eg: They scan transports and stuff, while the police worry about the smaller freighters. That way, if there's no LPI on, the way to get your smuggling on is in a freighter. Besides, moving 3500 units of any contraband is just dumb. You deserve to get blasted by a dreadnought for that.
