What i've been doing few years back with same issue was installing into D drive instead of some ProgramFiles. Then after FL vanilla install i restarted PC. Then i installed Freelancer SDK. Then i opened Discovery installer and let Disco to be installed. Even if i used illegalo copy of FL i didnt used Crack. Additional try to not use Windows Aero. Turn off Antivirus just to see if this is causing the trouble.
Another important thing is as previous posts mentioned to check your graphic drivers. Check for latest updates and download them or if its possible try to roll back PC to previous graphic driver as not all of them are fully compatible with such old games like Freelancer.
Is your game crashing only if you are running Discovery or even if you try to open Vanilla FL? IF you have played vanilla FL before delete folder Freelancer in Documents/MyGames.
I know there have been troubles with some of the Nvidia drivers and FXAA had to be disabled in Driver settings.
