I'll just add to the "would anyone abandon a station?". Several Freeports started that way, when squatters settled on an abandoned station. Those were rather large stations (although probably expanded over time) in good locations.

These stations should be rather recently abandoned, small and in not so good strategic locations. They should also be scarce.

Overall, grand idea.

I'm going to vote yes as well.

We run into that situation in real life many times. In many cases, it's much more cost effective to simply scrap something on site or just leave than it is to try to reclaim it.

So in Freelancer terms, it took an investment to get some supplies out into the boonies, to study something or to be a gathering / mining place. Then when the company folded or the research was completed, it would cost more to try to pull the old stuff back than it would to buy new.

Now, the Junkers move their stations to the scrap fields, but they're also used to making do without all the luxuries that pampered scientists require. That's also why Junkers bases don't look like much.

I think on the whole, this would be a good idea. It'd give people people some place to stop. I would like to see these start out as abandonded, and perhaps as things grow in later mods, to have those made into freelancer or other bases.

i am all for this idea. These bases shouldn't be in core house systems but in places like the sigmas, Galileo, Omega7, ect.

How about some of them are 'damaged' and can only handle fighters? It wouldn't make sense for an abandoned station to serve as a resupply point for a fleet, unless it was RPed that way on the forums, as part of a series of events and such.

Still leave a few for capship docking, for people like Mon'Star, who don't really have a good home.

Freeport 4 for example.

RPly, I fully agree with the idea.
Gameplay practical way, I disagree. Because here, we don't only have good roleplayers, we have powerplayers and noobs, which ruins good stuffs.

Imagine lawful pursuing a smuggler, smuggler dock with one such abandonned base, and decides to log off.

Very poor roleplay, and that neutral base just made his escape easier than before.

In a good roleplay form, he would have;
1. avoided the station to dock with a base diplomatically impossible for the lawful to go aboard and search (junkers)
2. continue to run until he is out of lawful juridiction
3. dock with the station anyway - and roleplay it out aboard the station, which I find a very attractive idea. Imagine the smuggler having a crew of 10, against 2 lawful pilots, the smugglers might actually get away with it by fighting it off on land.

Does this happen that often on server?
Admit it, not really.

Why we wouldn't put them along any major smuggling or trading routs, since like I said they should be in strategically unimportant areas.

Also, I like the idea of making some of them fighter only, no mooring points on the station.

Yeah, Yue Fei mentioned exactly what I was going to say. If the base is in a house system and the police are chasing you, how is docking there going to help you escape. All it would do is corner you and the police can call in backup, land on the base, arrest or kill you, and go on their merry way.

But since we have all the silly traders out there that refuse to RP, all they would do is dock there and claim that you cant touch them. And if the police players tried to RP landing and arresting you, I'm almost positive the trader would simply log. Happens all the time. Shoot, I've seen Bretonian traders in Kusari pull the same crap by landing on one of the Kusari planets - totall OORP. This would just make things like that worse.

I do love the RP aspect of it though, could add a lot of flavor to the game.

Elaborate ones that could be flown through, like the Hispania, would be nice. It would allow fighter craft to set up ambushes for larger ships, traders, or even just hide from capital ships.

These abandoned bases could also serve as neutral stations or even just elaborate settings. Wouldn't it be creepy to fly through a graveyard of stations ranging from tiny science suites to massive battle stations? It would also make a unique place to mine for things like scrap metal, radioactive waste, bots and bats, ammo, and other various station junk.

Two thumbs way, way up!

I'd like to see Ithaca captured and rebuilt by someone.

Excellent idea.

The station wouldn't be generically neutral in practise really.
If someone came along and re-pressurised a station after mending the holes in it, they would generally be in a faction such as the Junkers.

Why would a single crew come along and re-pressurise a station and then allow any tom dick and harry to use it?

If there are these bases I'd see them as Junker bases really, or some other group.
