Should the server come down, I would just go play my Xbox or use StumbleUpon, or invade a small country on Hearts of Iron II.
This server cannot be expected to run like a well run corporate one. This server uses a flawed game engine, sometimes I think its the GAME that crashes the server. Or Windows.
On that note, is it possible to use Linux for this game as a server? I hear its not possible client side, what about host side?
yes, you need the directplay workaround for wine, but you can run the server.

Not sometimes...most of the time.

Apparently FLServer and FL do work under wine but I think it wouldn't help -- windows is operating okay it's the game that is crashing, specifically a memory leak -- adding linux/wine would just be another layer of something to go wrong. The leak is probably caused by a bug in the mod but haven't been able to find it yet.
Quote:supported. the server MUST go down for a while.
We can turn it off but turning it off won't fix the problems. I've already got many different things in place to catch and control crashes and will be adding some more soon.

ok, its a memory leak. If we know WHERE in the memory the leak is, can't we write a program that can detect when the memory is about to overflow and warn the players?
"Unexpected dark matter wave detected, it is advised to dock immediately"

uh...i'm pretty sure memory doesnt work like that......
if its a "leak" it would pretty much be instantaneous when it happens. meaning, no time for anything. it doesnt just slowly fill up like a cup. its either there or its not. from my understanding of it, anyways.
if it werent for the "catch and control" things, it would probably crash the server everytime the "leak" happens.

the crashes happen (at least for me) about the same times every day. We could reboot the server at those times?
What about physically turning the server off for 5 minutes?
Would that be ok / fix the problem?
How long has the server been continually running anyway?

if its more than a month then windows is certainly messing it up.

If I knew where the memory leak was I'd just stop it leaking and then the server wouldn't crash.
The next best is to quickly reboot the server when a memory leak condition starts. This will at least let the server come back quickly.
